Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) Jason Kidd is happy to be flying under the radar, even if one dazzling pass allowed Vince Carter to soar high. Kidd overcame a sluggish start to score eight of his 13 points in the fourth quarter and Carter finished with 16 as the New Jersey Nets overcame another big game from Stephon Marbury to defeat the New York Knicks, 93-87. It was the first meeting between the local rivals since the Nets acquired Carter from the Toronto Raptors last month. The game also took on extra spice after Marbury called himself the best point guard in the NBA, a claim that Kidd, who plays the same position, chose to avoid. "I'm just going to go about my job," Kidd said. "I've learned from the Stocktons and Magics of the world to just go out there and play. I've never been one to talk or boast about what I've done or how I am against other guys." Kidd, acquired from the Phoenix Suns in a 2001 trade involving Marbury, had plenty of opportunity to boast about a play in the third quarter. With Carter trailing behind on a fast break, Kidd put a perfect pass off the glass that Carter slammed home, giving the Nets a 67-60 lead with 10:20 left in the third quarter. "It is fun (playing with him)," Carter said of Kidd. "He puts you in positions to succeed and all you have to do is make it. He makes it easier for everyone." Marbury tried to make it hard on the Nets, scoring 31 points to become the first Knick with three straight games of 30 points or more since Patrick Ewing in March, 1997. But it was not enough to give New York a fourth straight win. Using a zone defense early, New Jersey opened an 18-point lead in the first half and the Knicks could not recover. "They did a great job with their zone in the beginning of the game," Marbury said. "We couldn't be as aggressive as we wanted when they went into their zone. We couldn't make shots." Richard Jefferson scored 17 points for the Nets, who have won 17 of their last 20 meetings with the Knicks, including a four-game sweep in last season's playoffs. New Jersey will be an even more imposing foe due to the addition of Carter, and New York knows it. "Vince Carter makes them a better team," Marbury said. "They now have three guys on the perimeter than can make the play." With the Knicks keeping their eye on Carter and Kidd, that opened things up elsewhere as five Nets scored in double figures. Rodney Buford scored 13 points and Nenad Krstic added 12. "We don't want to talk much," Jefferson said. "We just want to go out and play hard." New York used an 11-2 run to cut New Jersey's lead to 84-79 with 2:05 left before Buford answered with a wide-open 3-pointer with 88 seconds remaining. The Knicks would get no closer than five the rest of the way as Kidd made four free throws in the final 32 seconds. "Buford was the guy that really hurt us tonight," New York coach Lenny Wilkens said. "In the first half, we didn't come out with the focus we needed." Nazr Mohammed scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Knicks, but Allan Houston was held to eight points. The Nets came out with more energy, jumping to a 13-5 lead in the first six minutes and taking a 26-20 lead after one quarter on a 3-pointer by Jabari Smith at the buzzer, the first of his career. New Jersey kept up the pace by scoring the first nine points of the second quarter, capped by a 3-pointer by Jefferson. The Knicks trailed by as many as 17 in the third quarter before cutting it to five on a basket by Trevor Ariza early in the fourth quarter.
