Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Corey Maggette got to the free-throw line and got the Los Angeles Clippers back above .500. Maggette scored 15 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter as the Los Angeles Clippers won their third straight game, a 102-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. Entering the game second in the NBA with 11 free throws per 48 minutes, Maggette made all 13 of his shots from the line and has attempted 44 from the stripe in his last three games. "Every game I just try to attack the glass," Maggette said. "I try to be aggressive to score and if I do get fouled, I step up and make free throws." The Clippers never trailed in the final period, but the Trail Blazers drew even, 92-92, on a pair of free throws by Zach Randolph with 5:11 remaining. Maggette sank two foul shots at the other end after Bobby Simmons grabbed one of the Clippers' 19 offensive rebounds. "They hit some big shots," Blazers forward Ruben Patterson said. "And their offensive rebounds kept us in the hole the entire game." Portland made one final push, tying it, 96-96, on a runner by Nick Van Exel with just over a minute to go. Maggette got to the stripe again, though, to give Los Angeles the lead for good, then sealed the win with a 21-footer with 19 seconds on the clock. Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks credited Maggette for drawing the fouls. "If you ask them, I don't think they (fouled) on purpose," Cheeks said. "We certainly wouldn't want to foul Maggette in a two-point game. He got 11 free throw attempts in the second half as it was." Maggette made 8-of-12 shots en route to his fifth 30-point performance this season. He had just three last season, when he led the NBA in free throws made and attempted. "Tonight was a night I was making some shots," Maggette said. "Things were going good and I just want to continue that. We just credit our team for playing the right way." Elton Brand scored 18 points for Los Angeles (16-15), which is over .500 through 31 games for the first time in three years. "It feels good to be one game over .500," Brand said. "We're talking about that and it's buzzing around here. We're excited about that because that's what we're playing for." Derek Anderson scored 12 of his 15 points in the first half to lift Portland to a 51-48 lead at the break. Bobby Simmons added eight of his 22 points in an 18-4 run that gave Los Angeles a 66-55 lead midway through the period. "We had a slow start at the beginning of the game and we had a slow start in the third quarter," Cheeks said. "We had to fight our way back in the third quarter, which we did." Van Exel nailed two 3-pointers in the final minute of the third quarter to draw the Blazers within 75-72 after 36 minutes. "(Van Exel) started hitting some big shots for his team," Maggette said. "Portland is a team that attacks the basket. We knew they were going to go through a stretch where they were going to hit some shots." Damon Stoudamire scored 14 points off the bench and Van Exel added 13 for Portland, which has lost four of five. Portland went five minutes in the fourth quarter without a basket, but made 9-of-13 free throws to stay in it. Former Clipper Darius Mills scored nine points before suffering a left knee injury late in the fourth quarter and did not return. His status for Friday's game against Miami is uncertain. "I won't know until I get an MRI (Thursday)," Miles said. "It just went out for a minute. I hope it's not long and I can play the next game."
