Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) - Michael Finley and Dirk Nowitzki delivered a record-setting 1-2 punch. Finley scored 15 of his 33 points in the first quarter and Nowitzki 15 of his 34 in the second period as the Dallas Mavericks shot a team-record 74 percent from the field in the first half and cruised to a 121-101 victory over the Indiana Pacers. The Mavericks never trailed as they rolled to their fifth straight win. They broke 100 points for the seventh straight game - reaching triple figures late in the third quarter - and eclipsing 120 for the fourth time. "Our offense has really been looking good lately," Finley said. "Indiana is one of the better defensive teams and we put up 120 again. We're pushing the ball more. JT (Jason Terry) is figuring out how he's going to run this team. He's getting in the middle and hitting the open guys. That's something that (Steve) Nash was so good at over the last couple of years. JT has really picked that up." Finley, who has been slowed by injuries this season, made 10-of-18 shots and 12-of-13 free throws as he posted a season high in points. He scored six points in a 10-0 burst that gave Dallas a 25-13 lead. "I just got good looks at the basket," Finley said. "My teammates where setting good screens for me and I was making the best of my opportunities. I got to the line tonight for a change, which is always helpful. Everything just seemed to open up for me." "I think he's been playing extremely well since he got back from his injury," Nowitzki said. "He's aggressive on both ends of the floor. It's fun to watch. He's making tough shots. Taking a lot of pressure of our offense. It's been great." In the first quarter, the Mavericks shot 67 percent (12-of-18) as they opened a 34-22 advantage. They were even better in the second quarter. Led by Nowitzki, Dallas made 14-of-17 shots and scored 43 points. Jerry Stackhouse scored 10 of his 18 points in the period, which ended with the Mavericks holding a 77-55 lead. In the first half, Dallas made 26-of-35 shots, breaking the team record for shooting percentage in a half. It shot 72 percent (28-of-39) in both the second half at the Los Angeles Clippers on February 6, 1989 and vs. Washington on January 23, 1990. "It was an awesome shooting display in the first half," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "Allowing 74 percent shooting in a half is unheard of, even against a great team like this. Our effort needed to be exceptional. It wasn't and theirs was, and the result was a game where we really never challenged them." Nowitzki also had 13 rebounds despite sitting for most of the fourth quarter. The Mavericks finished at 55 percent (40-of-73) and cruised to their seventh win in eight games. Jermaine O'Neal scored 32 points for the Pacers, who have lost two in a row. They are 4-3 since the All-Star power forward's return from his 15-game suspension. "Not having Ron (Artest) out there with us, not having Stevie Jackson, not having (Jonathan) Bender and (Scot) Pollard, we're not at full force," O'Neal said. "We still have enough to play at a high level. We still have enough to compete and beat teams. We're just not playing well."
