Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady took over the game and handed the Denver Nuggets another loss. McGrady scored 20 of his 45 points in the fourth quarter as the Houston Rockets snapped a two-game losing streak with a 116-98 victory over the reeling Nuggets, who have lost 10 of their last 11 contests. Denver never led, but trailed by just two points entering the final period before Houston opened the fourth with a 13-2 run to pull away. Yao Ming hit consecutive baskets to ignite the spurt. After Rodney White's dunk pulled Denver within 79-75, Yao sank a pair of free throws and McGrady nailed a 3-pointer to open a nine-point cushion with 9:42 to play. Maurice Taylor added a basket and McGrady capped the burst with a driving layup with 8:21 left to push the lead to 88-75. McGrady, who also grabbed 12 rebounds, made three 3-pointers down the stretch as the Nuggets got no closer than nine points the rest of the way. "In the fourth quarter I told myself that I got a good rest and that I needed to take over the game," McGrady said. "I felt comfortable with my shot and they started to fall for me." Carmelo Anthony scored 27 points on 7-of-20 shooting for Denver, which fell behind 18-4 to start the game. The Nuggets have lost four in a row and fell to 1-4 under interim coach Michael Cooper. "We keep losing right now and no one seems to know why," Anthony said. "We start off the game 15 or 16 points in the hole and then try to wait until the second half to pick it back up." "There are a lot of games left," Cooper said. "We need to somehow manufacture or even steal a win." McGrady scored 22 points in the first half to give the Rockets a 58-47 lead at the break. Anthony scored nine points during the Nuggets' comeback in the third quarter, which saw a combined six technical fouls between both teams, and Rodney White sank a 21-footer late in the period to make it 75-73, setting the stage for McGrady's big fourth quarter. "Denver did a great job fighting back," McGrady said. "I was trying to impose my will on the game in the fourth quarter." Yao finished with 21 points for the Rockets, who shot 52 percent (42-of-81) overall and 58 percent (11-of-19) from the arc. "We were shooting well today from three," Yao said. "I'm not sure why they kept double-teaming me on the inside and not put more defense on the outside." "Our defense is really lacking," Cooper said. "We need to get some chemistry and get this team going." The injury problems continued for the Nuggets as guard Andre Miller suffered two in the second half. After returning from a right ankle sprain in the third quarter, he strained his left calf and exited the game for good with 9:10 left in the fourth quarter. Miller is listed as day-to-day and his injuries will be further examined Monday morning.
