Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Stephon Marbury showed his younger cousin how it's done. Marbury collected 20 points and 12 assists and Allan Houston scored a season-best 25 points as the New York Knicks snapped a season-high four-game losing streak with a 113-105 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. The game marked the professional Madison Square Garden debut of Portland rookie Sebastian Telfair, who - like his cousin Marbury - attended Lincoln High School in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn before the Trail Blazers used the 13th pick in the draft on him. "I think his progress is moving along," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "He wants to be great and I think he has a chance to be very good. I think he puts a lot of pressure on himself, particularly coming here to New York. But I think he puts a lot of pressure on himself to be great." "Once he gets a consistent jump shot he will be fine," Marbury said of Telfair. "He knows the game. He knows how to play. He is very quick and very talented." Telfair scored just two points on 1-of-6 shooting, but impressed Cheeks by dishing out a season-high seven assists in 23 minutes. "I think that is going to be the essence of his game, breaking people down, penetrating the ball and finding open shooters," Cheeks said. "I think that is what is going to make him a good player." Marbury bounced back from a sub-par game in Cleveland on Saturday and kept the Knicks from falling two games under .500. He made a pair of layups in the final 30 seconds to give New York a 55-42 advantage at the break and recorded three assists in a 12-4 spurt that gave the Knicks their largest lead, 67-46, three minutes into the second half. Damon Stoudamire came off the bench to score 14 of his 18 points in the second half. He cut Portland's deficit to 84-77 early in the final period but the Knicks scored the next seven points and took a 91-77 advantage on Jerome Williams' three-point play with 9:56 on the clock. Telfair, whose minutes have begun to increase, scored his lone basket with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, drawing Portland within 33-27. That was when the Knicks began to pull away as Houston and rookie Trevor Ariza combined for 12 points in a 15-6 run that made it 48-33 with 4:20 left in the half. Zach Randolph contributed 27 points and 10 rebounds and Ruben Patterson added 20 points for the Blazers, who have lost four in a row and five of their last six. A day after shooting 39 percent and getting embarrassed in Gund Arena, the Knicks put together one of their more efficient efforts of the season as they shot a season-high 59 percent (41-of-70) and had a season-best seven players score in double figures. "We played great team ball tonight," said Williams, who scored 15 points starting for the injured Tim Thomas. "Whenever the defense double-teamed us we just found the open guy. This is great team ball and we got the results we were looking for."
