Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Coach Lenny Wilkens said the New York Knicks weren't talented enough to take any opponent lightly. The New Orleans Hornets proved him right. Baron Davis had 21 points and 10 assists and Lee Nailon scored 18 points as the league-worst Hornets snapped a 15-game road losing streak with an 88-82 victory over the Knicks. Starting with a victory over Portland on Sunday, New York plays seven consecutive games against teams at or under .500. Despite this seemingly soft portion of the schedule, Wilkens worried about his team playing down against such opponents. "We're not good enough to take anyone for granted," Wilkens said prior to the game. After trailing by as many as 11 points in the third quarter, the Knicks battled back and pulled into an 80-80 tie on Stephon Marbury's layup with 91 seconds remaining. Nailon, a former Knick, answered with a baseline jumper just 17 seconds later to give New Orleans (4-29) the lead for good. "I think we have more talent than them," said Nailon, who appeared in 38 games for the Knicks in 2002-03 "I think we played harder then them. They just had one guy out there that really matched our energy and that was Jerome Williams." P.J. Brown added a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 84-80 with 32 seconds to play. Dan Dickau, who scored 17 points, hit four straight from the foul line to clinch the win and as the Hornets posted back-to-back victories for the first time this season and improved to 2-17 on the road. Despite holding the Hornets to 18 points and 31 percent shooting (5-of-16) in the final 12 minutes, New York was not much better. After matching a season low with just 14 points in the third quarter, the Knicks shot just under 35 percent (8-of-23) in the fourth period and had only one basket over the final 3:28. "It's a tribute to our guys," said New Orleans coach Byron Scott, who has used 14 different starting lineups this season. "They've been working their (behinds) off all season long and we've had to deal with injuries." Davis and Nailon each scored 14 points in the first half as New Orleans jumped out to 54-47 lead at intermission. After falling behind, 36-35, for the first time on Jerome Williams' dunk, the Hornets outscored the Knicks, 19-11, over the final 6:38, with 10 points coming on layups or dunks. Allan Houston led the Knicks with 17 points. But coming off a season-best 25 points in Sunday's win over Portland, he made just 6-of-20 shots, including 1-of-8 from the arc and expressed concerns about how his team mentally prepares for games. "It's a struggle mentally," Houston said. (It's) just something that we have to raise our awareness. We just have to prepare better mentally before the games. Mentally we're not as focused and sharp as we were a couple of weeks ago." Marbury had 15 points and 13 assists and Williams added 12 and 11 rebounds for New York, which has lost five of six. With starting small forward Tim Thomas (right calf) and reserve power forward Mike Sweetney (right ankle) unable to play due to injuries, the Knicks used just two reserves as no starter played fewer than 32 minutes. "We didn't shoot the ball well," Wilkens said. "Certainly missing two starters didn't help against this team. When you're not making shots, it becomes a long night."
