Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Ray Allen finished off the Los Angeles Clippers with his shooting and his passing. Allen collected 31 points and seven assists and the Seattle SuperSonics reserves combined for 49 en route to a 104-99 victory over the Clippers in the opener of a home-and-away series. Despite a 114-84 loss to the Clippers on opening night, the SuperSonics have dominated them over the last decade, winning 47 of the last 54 meetings. The teams will meet at the Staples Center on Wednesday. "Coming out tonight, based on their record, we couldn't think they could not beat us," Allen said. "They are capable of beating us tomorrow, so we had to be strong and force them to lay down." With Seattle leading 97-94 with 77 seconds left, Allen drove the lane and found Rashard Lewis for a 3-pointer from the left corner. Lewis had been sidelined by a right thigh bruise earlier in the game. "The more you can do that - penetrate and then pass it out - the more you put the defense in disarray," Allen said. One minute later, Allen attacked the basket again but took matters into his own hands with a layup that made the score 102-97. "I think they expected me to shoot, but I wanted to be a little more aggressive," Allen added. "I wanted to make sure I got to the hole and I made a good play there." "Ray made a couple of big plays," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "He makes big plays when they need them. Our guys were all over him and he showed great concentration to be able to finish it." Lewis finished with nine points in 24 minutes, but admitted he was playing hurt in the second half. "It affected me a whole lot," Lewis said. "I couldn't run. I couldn't jump. I couldn't do any of the things I wanted to do. It's just something you have to play through." Lewis admitted he wasn't sure if he would be able to go Wednesday night in the return match. Vladimir Radmanovic spearheaded the SuperSonics' bench attack with 18 points and seven rebounds and Danny Fortson was 9-of-9 from the line en route to 11 points. "(Radmanovic's) a star," SuperSonics coach Nate McMillan said. "I think he's one of the best sixth men in the league. We need him to come out and give us something every night. His scoring is definitely something we need." "In our first meeting we beat them by 30 and they were determined to win this game," Los Angeles forward Corey Maggette said. "They have so many good players on that team. The biggest thing is Radmanovic. He's very mobile and he's shooting the ball extremely well right now." Los Angeles got 23 points from its bench. Maggette scored 20 points and Elton Brand added 17 and 11 rebounds for the Clippers (16-17), who have lost two in a row. "We have good low-post presence," said Maggette, who also had seven assists. "We wanted to start off getting the ball to Brand and myself to try to make some plays." "I thought we did an awful lot of good things out there," Dunleavy said. "We made some mistakes on the offensive end on turnovers that really cost us."
