Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- A super effort off the bench by Ricky Davis helped the Boston Celtics remain a force at home. Davis scored 30 points in 35 minutes and Paul Pierce added 21 and a career high-tying 15 rebounds as the Celtics posted their seventh win in eight home games, a 106-94 triumph over the hapless Atlanta Hawks. Averaging 14.4 points per game, Davis scored 22 in Wednesday's 11-point loss to Toronto. The reserve guard was even better in this one, making 11-of-16 shots, including 3-of-4 from the arc. "I got into a great rhythm and the guys were feeding me the ball and the shots were falling," Davis said. After replacing Jiri Welsch at the 5:21 mark of the first quarter, Davis scored seven points to help the Celtics open a 34-21 lead after one period. He added nine in each of the next two quarters before chipping in five in the fourth for his highest point total since a season-best 34 on December 13 against the Los Angeles Clippers. "He gave us a great boost in the second quarter," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "The good thing about Ricky was his shot selection. He was 11-of-16. Just great shots." "We fed off his energy," Pierce added. "We looked to find him and then we played off him." Gary Payton scored 15 points and dished out seven assists, rookie Al Jefferson had 11 and eight boards and Mark Blount added 10 and eight for the Celtics, who improved to 9-2 in their last 11 home meetings with the Hawks. Boston with an 11-2 run and led by as many as 15 points in the first quarter. It had a 71-60 cushion with 5:26 to go in the third period before Atlanta cut the deficit to 80-76 after 36 minutes. The Celtics started the fourth period with an 8-0 burst, but the Hawks fought back, climbing within 90-85 with 6:03 remaining on back-to-back 3-pointers by Tyronn Lue and Peja Drobnjak. Boston responded following a timeout as Pierce hit a baseline jumper and Raef LaFrentz sank a 3-pointer to give Boston a 95-85 bulge with 5:13 to play. "When we needed to make a run, we made it," Pierce said. "We did things we needed to do to get the win. It's good for us because we're playing real well at home right now." Former Celtic Antoine Walker had 21 points, a season-high 17 rebounds and eight assists for the Hawks, who saw their all-time record in Boston fall to 29-104. "We beat ourselves tonight," said Walker, referring to Atlanta's 15-of-29 performance from the free-throw line. "It wasn't anything that they did, we just beat ourselves tonight. We played well enough to win, we just had too many missed layups and free throws if we want to win on the road." "We missed a (ton) of free throws," added Hawks coach Mike Woodson, whose team has lost seven of its last eight. "Our guys just have to believe they can make them. They have been a thorn in our side all year." Drafted sixth overall by the Celtics in 1996, Walker rebounded from a dismal performance in his first visit to FleetCenter as an opponent with Dallas last season. He scored just seven points on 3-of-14 shooting in the Mavericks' 105-103 loss on December 17, 2003. "I'll always feel like (Boston) is my home," Walker said. "The fans have been great to me. I still have a lot of close friends here and I still feel like a part of me is here."
