Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Eddy Curry and Tyson Chandler stood tall as the Chicago Bulls harkened back to their glory days. Curry scored the game-winning layup with 2.4 seconds remaining and Chandler blocked a potential tying shot as the Bulls rallied for their sixth straight victory, an 86-84 triumph over the slumping New York Knicks. "We went through a lot of stretches tonight where we let the Knicks score and we were never able to get loose," Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. "But our defense bailed us out in the end." The Bulls have their longest winning streak since the 1997-1998 squad won 13 in a row. That team, led by Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, went on to capture the club's sixth NBA championship. Chicago has not made the playoffs since. "It was a big win against a team that was ahead of us in the standings," Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich said. "Obviously we didn't play that well. But we were able to put it together down the stretch. Tyson really had a big block." With the game tied at 84-84 and seven seconds remaining, Andres Nocioni blocked a jumper by fellow rookie Trevor Ariza. Chandler saved the ball under his own basket with a flip pass that started a fast break, and Nocioni fed the 6-11 Curry for the go-ahead basket. "I knew he (Nocioni) was coming hard at me," Ariza said. "I should have just pump-faked and went around him." "Noch got me the ball," Curry said. "I just wanted to make sure I caught it before I shot it." After a timeout, the 7-1 Chandler blocked a short shot by Nazr Mohammed in the right low post as time expired. "It was an unbelievable block and a unbelievable save," Mohammed said. "I want to see that one again because 90 percent of the gym thought the ball would go out of bounds. They were aware enough to get guys downcourt, and Curry made a tough basket." Rookie Ben Gordon came off the bench to score 14 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter to help Chicago rally from a 65-56 deficit. "It was very important I came out and scored the first couple of baskets," Gordon said. "I think we needed that lift just to kind of redeem myself for the three quarters I had previously." Curry scored 17 points and Hinrich added 15 with 11 assists as the Bulls won for the 14th time in their last 19 games. Ariza established season highs with 18 points and nine rebounds. He made 1-of-2 free throws with 1:12 remaining that tied the score, 84-84. Stephon Marbury had 25 points and 10 assists for the Knicks, who have lost six of their last seven.
