Game StoryHOUSTON (Ticker) -- This time, Tracy McGrady did not need to pull off a miracle. The San Antonio Spurs made it a little easier on him. McGrady highlighted an ugly affair with 28 points as the Houston Rockets survived a difficult offensive night with a 73-67 victory over the Spurs. San Antonio made just nine shots in the first half and was outrebounded overall, 49-39, in a rematch of a thriller on this court December 9. In that contest, McGrady scored an improbable 13 points in the last 35 seconds, finishing the flurry with a 3-pointer for an 81-80 win. He scored 13 points in the first half of this one to help the Rockets to a 30-28 lead. The combined 58 points matched the fourth-lowest first half in the shot clock era. "Their defense is unbelievable," said McGrady, who made just 10-of-28 shots. "Tonight showed what type of team we can be." The Spurs were held without a basket over the final 9:19 of the second quarter and went 6:48 of the fourth period without a point. During that second slump, the Rockets scored just eight points and needed a jumper by McGrady to reclaim the lead, 58-57, with 4:09 left. McGrady scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, providing the dagger with a 3-pointer in the final minute that gave Houston a 69-61 lead. The shot cemented Houston's season-high fourth straight win. "You like to play aesthetically pleasing and win, but the other team impacts your offense," said Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy, who has guided the Rockets to consecutive wins over the Spurs for the first time since 1997. "We benefited from them playing back-to-back twice (when we've beaten them)." Backup center Dikembe Mutombo, now in the twilight of his career at age 38, grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds in 20 minutes and teamed with fellow 7-footer Yao Ming to limit superstar Tim Duncan. "He had a huge impact on the game, protecting the basket, rebounding the ball, getting us some extra possessions," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "Duncan is obviously a monster. Dikembe fought him hard." "I played great," Mutombo said. "The reason I was brought here was to play defense, block a shot. They see me coming (and say), 'Mutombo's in the game, watch out.' I like that." Yao scored 13 points and helped hold Duncan to 18 on 7-of-19 shooting. Duncan is 14-of-41 vs. Houston this season. "Their defense was very tough on Timmy," said San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich, who saw his team held 30 points below its season average. "They made it very tough on him." "When we play Houston, this is how it goes," Duncan said. "You grind it out and whoever makes the shots at the end is the one who wins." The Spurs' two baskets in the second quarter and nine in the first half matched franchise lows. Tony Parker provided their lone spark with 12 of his 21 points in the third quarter, when San Antonio gained a 50-48 lead. His efforts were needed after fellow guard Manu Ginobili left in the third with a bruised right quadriceps.
