Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Even on a bad ankle, Dirk Nowitzki still is pretty good. Nowitzki shook off a sprained left ankle to collect 26 points and 12 rebounds as the Dallas Mavericks used a late surge to turn back the New Jersey Nets, 98-93, and snap a two-game slide. Averaging 32.4 points in his previous seven games, Nowitzki turned his ankle with 5:26 left in the second quarter and headed to the locker room. He had X-rays that were negative, then taped the ankle and returned for the second half. "I kind of tweaked it," Nowitzki said. "I could tell right away it wasn't that bad, but I didn't know. I came down a little awkward. I walked it off, but we did some X-rays to see what the bone spurs are doing in there and got retaped and went back out there." "I didn't know I was going to have Dirk in the second half," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "I don't know that we could have won the game had we not had him. He had a pretty darn good game." The Mavericks struggled to pull away from the Nets, who have a depleted frontcourt but still boast stars Jason Kidd and Vince Carter. A basket by Kidd gave the Nets a 68-67 lead with 7 1/2 minutes to play. Two free throws by Darrell Armstrong gave Dallas the lead for good and triggered a decisive 18-3 run. Nowitzki was in the middle of it, making 6-of-6 free throws. "It was ugly out there," Nowitzki said. "We couldn't really get going. There was no energy in the building and we never really got going the way we wanted to. But sometimes you just have to win ugly." Michael Finley had a pair of buckets early in the surge. Jason Terry capped it with consecutive 3-pointers that pushed the advantage to 85-71 with 3:34 left. "(Mavericks owner Mark) Cuban was on me, man," Terry said. "He was like, 'Let it rip. Keep shooting.' When your boss is on you like that, you're going to let it go with no hesitation and it fell tonight." The 26-year-old Nowitzki made 8-of-16 shots and 10-of-10 free throws to move within a basket of 10,000 points for his career. He led five starters in double figures. "We didn't even know that he was close to a big milestone and I guess the fans wanted to see that," Dallas forward Alan Henderson said. Jerry Stackhouse had 20 points and 10 boards, Finely scored 16 points and Terry added 15 for the Mavericks, who made 28-of-31 free throws and won for the sixth time in eight games. Carter scored 29 points on 12-of-32 shooting and Kidd collected his 61st career triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists for the Nets, who have lost four in a row and six of seven. "I think these two games show we're not far away," said Nets coach Lawrence Frank, whose club lost in overtime at Houston on Thursday. "There is no consolation prize; this still goes into the 'L' column." Dallas shot 18 more free throws than New Jersey, which was whistled for 24 fouls, 10 more than Dallas. "I was just trying to get to the rim," said Carter, who shot just three free throws. "I wanted to make something happen, but it was almost like I was going in there and getting beat up for nothing. That's why sometimes it's almost worth pulling up and shooting."
