Game StoryHOUSTON (Ticker) -- It's amazing what a few days off can do to refresh Jamaal Tinsley and the Indiana Pacers. Tinsley scored 28 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the Pacers to an 87-74 victory over the Houston Rockets. Indiana shot 52 percent (35-of-67) and made 8-of-12 3-pointers against the Rockets after going 2-of-14 from the arc in an 85-84 loss to the Orlando Magic on Saturday. "The ball was just falling and it was a good team effort," Tinsley said. "We came out and played hard for 48 minutes. Making our shots and limiting Houston to only one shot was big. It was important for us to come out and get us rolling." After a quiet first quarter that saw the teams combine for 17 turnovers, Tinsley scored Indiana's first 10 points of the second period, including a pair of 3-pointers, to open a 31-23 lead. "Starting off the game, it was a struggle for him and the team," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "Then we put in some pick-and-roll plays and he really got it going. When he can mix his game like that, he's one of the top-notch point guards in the league." The Pacers led by as many as nine midway through the third quarter. But with the game tied early in the fourth, Tinsley scored six points during a 15-2 run to put the Pacers in front, 78-65, with 5:58 left. The spurt began with five straight points from Fred Jones, who capped the outburst with a 3-pointer. "Obviously, we're struggling in all facets," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We got on a good run and went from tied to down 10 pretty quickly. Everyone wants to anoint you when you win, like you have it all solved, and it is never that way." Houston was able to close within 78-71 with 3:53 left. But Jermaine O'Neal, who finished with 27 points, scored inside. After an inbounds pass to Yao Ming, Tinsley snuck up from behind to knock the ball away from Yao and went on to bury his fifth 3-pointer for an 83-71 edge. Tinsley finished with 11 points in the fourth quarter. "Obviously, Jamaal does a lot," O'Neal said. "He keeps the defense off-balance. He's one of the best in the game at making plays." O'Neal is averaging 33 points in his eight January games and Carlisle credits him for sparking the Pacers' recent resurgence. "Jermaine coming back gave us a spiritual lift," Carlisle said. "And his play speaks loudly for what he means to this team." "We just want to continue to get better," O'Neal said. "We have to put ourselves in good position to be extremely competitive and going for the division title. We had to put our hard hats on in the first half of the season." Jeff Foster added 11 for the Pacers, who have held their last four opponents to less than 86 points while winning three times. Tracy McGrady scored 28 points and Yao had 21 for the Rockets, who made a season low 1-of-13 3-pointers. Houston, behind the defensive-minded Van Gundy, has allowed two straight teams to shoot 50 percent from the field following four consecutive wins. "I just think that we've got to take a little bit more pride," McGrady said. "We can't get too comfortable with a four-game winning streak and feel too good about ourselves."
