Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Vince Carter is getting more comfortable with Jason Kidd and the New Jersey Nets. Carter had his best game in a Nets uniform with a season-high 33 points, nine assists and nine rebounds and Kidd added 17 points and 10 assists as New Jersey posted a 96-90 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. Acquired from the Toronto Raptors in December, Carter made 14-of-24 shots as the Nets - who rank 29th in the NBA in shooting percentage - shot 53 percent (39-of-74) to snap a four-game losing streak against the Bucks. Six of Carter's baskets came on assists from Kidd, who was two rebounds shy of his 62nd career triple-double. "He's so unselfish," Kidd said of Carter. "He gets you wide-open looks. No matter what your record is, if everyone is touching the ball, you have a chance." Carter took over late in the third period after Joe Smith's jumper gave Milwaukee a 66-63 lead with 3:30 left. He hit a jumper on the other end and assisted on Rodney Buford's 23-footer to give the Nets a one-point edge less than a minute later. "(Buford) is a heck of a catch-and-shoot guy," Carter said. Smith hit a pair of free throws before rookie Nenad Krstic countered with a short jumper. Carter added two from the stripe, assisted on Buford's long jumper at the end of the quarter and scored the first four points of the final period to push the Nets' advantage to 77-69. "When your two best players have almost a triple-double, it just shows you how well-rounded they are," New Jersey coach Lawrence Frank said. "Because not only do they make plays for themselves, more importantly they make plays for their teammates." The offensive teamwork translated into a season-high 28 assists for the Nets. Carter had an alley-oop slam from Kidd to push New Jersey's lead to 84-74 with 6:28 remaining, eliciting the crowd's most vocal cheer. "I told him, 'I'm over here, if you can see me,'" Carter said. While Carter provided the offense against a tough defender in Desmond Mason, New Jersey blocked four shots in the final 1:41 of the third period to keep Milwaukee at bay. "I had to be aggressive and attack (Mason), and not doubt myself," Carter said. Michael Redd scored 13 of his 30 points in the third quarter for the Bucks, who have lost five of their last six games. Mason added 17 and Dan Gadzuric grabbed 14 rebounds for Milwaukee. Redd found himself facing Kidd after scoring Milwaukee's first nine points of the second half. The move halted the Bucks' rally and set up the Nets for their game-breaking run later in the third quarter. "Right there was the whole game," Redd said of Kidd's defense. After being held to just four fast-break points in Monday's 85-84 win against Atlanta, New Jersey held a 15-6 edge in the open floor. "We had our chances," Bucks coach Terry Porter said. "Our biggest concern tonight was not allowing these guys to get into the open court. We got caught taking some long jumpers ... and they were off to the races."
