Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Scott Padgett returned the favor for the Houston Rockets. Padgett hit an off-balance floater at the buzzer as the Rockets posted a 92-91 victory over the reeling New York Knicks and gave coach Jeff Van Gundy a victory over his former team. In Houston on November 18, Jamal Crawford banked in a 3-pointer as time expired to give the Knicks a 93-92 win over the Rockets. Crawford also had the ball late in this one but passed up a shot, leading to a 24-second violation with 9.5 seconds remaining. Crawford and Marbury exchanged numerous passes and when Marbury fed to his backcourt mate near the foul line, the shot clock had already expired. "The shot clock just ran out on us," Crawford said. "I thought Steph (Marbury) was going to shoot. He saw me in his vision but it just slipped out of my hands." After calling timeout, the Rockets got the ball into the hands of Tracy McGrady, who passed to Padgett at the top of the key. With time running down, Padgett beat Crawford off the dribble and hit a 15-footer from the foul line to hand the Knicks a crushing defeat. "The play was supposed to get Tracy a shot," Padgett explained. "Then he could have gone 1-on-3. They did a good job denying it. I was actually looking to pass it. When I went to pass it to Jon Barry, there was a guy right in the passing lane. I didn't have anybody to pass to and I knew I had to get a shot off. I got lucky." "Those guys played great defense at the end," McGrady said. "I couldn't get a shot off. It was a little payback from when Jamal Crawford beat us at the buzzer." According to Padgett it was the second game-winning shot he hit in his five-year career. His other one was a five-foot tip-in during his days with the Utah Jazz, but it was not at the buzzer. "I can't think of a bigger shot that I hit," Padgett said. "I haven't hit a floater since I was in high school." The Knicks fell to 6-12 in games decided by six points or less. Three of the defeats have come during the longest skid of the season. Last Saturday, the Knicks lost by two in Chicago when Eddy Curry hit a layup with 2.4 seconds remaining. Two days later at home against the Bulls, rookie Ben Gordon hit an off-balance jumper with one-tenth of a second to play. Van Gundy, who posted a 248-172 record over parts of seven seasons with the Knicks and guided them to the NBA Finals in 1999, improved to 3-1 against his former team. He posted a blowout win in his first appearance here January 8, 2004, a game that led to the Knicks hiring Lenny Wilkens. "The Garden is a special place to everyone who competes in the NBA, but particularly to someone who had already worked here as long as I did," Van Gundy said. The Rockets have won nine of their last 13 games to go three games over .500 for the second time this season (22-19). But this was their first win by less than five points since December 9 vs. San Antonio. The Knicks have dropped five straight games and nine of their last 10, leading to speculation that president Isiah Thomas will soon fire Wilkens, the NBA's winningest and losingest coach. "You have to look at the effort of the team and how they're playing," Wilkens said. "I thought we played hard enough to win the game. They just came up with the big shot and we wind up on the losing end." McGrady scored 35 points but only two in the fourth quarter. He had 18 in the third period, when the Rockets used runs of 13-0 and 10-0 to take a 72-63 lead. He reached 30 or more points for the 10th time this season but spent most of the fourth being blanketed by Jerome Williams and Kurt Thomas. Yao Ming added 22 points and Padgett chipped in 12 off the bench for the Rockets, who blew a 12-point lead in their loss to the Knicks in Houston. Marbury scored 20 points. In his third game back from the injured list, Crawford added 18 and Michael Sweetney helped fuel a fourth-quarter comeback with 10 of his 15 points down the stretch. "I went up and saw Jamal in my vision and passed it to him," Marbury said. "It slipped out of his hands and he passed it back and the (shot) clock ran out." The Knicks grabbed a 91-88 lead on Marbury's two free throws with 1:31 left, but Yao answered with an eight-footer on the next possession, pulling the Rockets within a point.
