Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Dan Dickau dominated the fourth quarter, all the way to his last shot. Dickau scored 17 of his career-high 27 points in the final 10 minutes, including the winning 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds remaining, as the improving New Orleans Hornets edged the slumping Los Angeles Clippers, 88-85. The NBA-worst Hornets (7-32) won for the fifth time in eight games as Dickau scored 12 of their last 15 points, including two 3-pointers in the final 20 seconds. He added eight assists without a turnover and was responsible for all but two of New Orleans' 25 points in the final period. Dickau, a 6-foot guard, swished the winner from 25 feet - beyond the reach of 7-footer Mikki Moore - and capped an edge-of-your-seat finish that included five lead changes and three ties in the final five minutes. "My whole mind-set was to get (Moore) back on his heels, and then I'll have enough to room to shoot the jump shot," Dickau said. "Even if he gets a hand up, he's not going to be able to contest it as well as he'd like." Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy was disappointed Moore didn't challenge the shot differently. "(Moore) had his hands down at his side, and he was a little bit off of him," Dunleavy said. "The only thing I would have preferred was for him to have his hands up so he could've contested the shot a little bit." "I thought I played good defense," Moore said. "(Dickau) took it from about three feet behind the line. He hit a great shot." The Clippers took their last lead at 82-81 on Rick Brunson's free throw with 53 seconds remaining. Dickau tied it when he made the first of two free throws with 39 seconds left, then P.J. Brown's offensive rebound set up Dickau's 3-pointer for an 85-82 advantage with 17 seconds remaining. Bobby Simmons tied it at 85 with 10 seconds to play with a rainbow 3-pointer from the left wing over the 6-10 Brown. After Dickau's go-ahead shot, Darrick Martin missed an off-balance 3-pointer as time expired. Red-hot Lee Nailon scored 22 points and rookie J.R. Smith added 12 for New Orleans, which committed just eight turnovers. Nailon is averaging 25.8 points in the last five games. A third-year player on his sixth team, Dickau is averaging 12.2 points and 3.4 assists since being acquired from Dallas in December. Starting for injured All-Star Baron Davis in the last three games, Dickau has averaged 20 points and 5.3 assists. "I've shown some people that I can play in this league. All I needed was a chance," Dickau said. "By no means am I completely satisfied. I'm happy with the progress I'm making, but I want to keep working and I want to keep improving." Elton Brand had 28 points on 12-of-17 shooting and 11 rebounds for the Clippers (18-22), who lost their fifth straight game. Simmons had 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists. "It's a tough trip," Brand said. "The good thing about this trip is that it's over. We've got some games coming up at home we think we can win. We've got guys getting healthy and coming back, so we're looking forward to that."
