Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The Orlando Magic finally figured out how to overcome Samuel Dalembert. Rookie Dwight Howard and Steve Francis scored on follow shots in the final minute as the shorthanded Magic used a late rally for a 115-111 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, who wasted one of the best games of Dalembert's career. "It was like a street fight," Francis said. "But we were able to hold them down the stretch by hitting some big shots." Dalembert, a third-year center, had a career-high 24 points, a season-high 16 rebounds and four blocks. He did most of his damage after picking up his fifth foul early in the third quarter as he changed shots, controlled the boards and finished alley-oop passes. "He had a great game," 76ers coach Jim O'Brien said. "We need to have a number of games where Sammy gets that many rebounds and where we find him around the basket. It's what we've been hoping for all year." "We were trying to go at Dalembert," Magic coach Johnny Davis said. "We went at him for three or four straight plays and he just had a fantastic game." In the third period, Dalembert had 16 points and seven boards as the 76ers closed a double-digit deficit to 84-83 entering the final quarter. "I was ready in case anything happened," said Dalembert, who had played his way onto the bench recently. "You have to step up." A jumper by Allen Iverson, who had 38 points and 10 assists, gave Philadelphia a 109-103 lead with 2:02 to play. But the Sixers did not score from the field again. Francis and rookie Jameer Nelson each made two free throws around one by teammate Hedo Turkoglu, cutting the deficit to 109-108 with 1:12 left. Iverson responded with a pair from the line before the Magic solved Dalembert's defense. Francis penetrated and had his shot changed by Dalembert, but Howard swooped in and dunked home the miss with 54 seconds to go. "I just wanted to go in and do all the dirty work," said Howard, who had 21 points and nine rebounds. "I wanted to make myself active and get us a win." After Iverson and Dalembert botched an alley-oop play, Francis again missed a drive and Howard had his shot altered by Dalembert before Francis put home that rebound for a 112-111 lead with 24 seconds left. "I took the ball to the basket and tried to draw a foul and didn't get it," Francis said. "Dwight did a great job rebounding and getting into position and he put it back up and, luckily, I was right there to finish it." "Every time it comes down to a tight game, then every little detail is crucial," Dalembert said. "A turnover is crucial. A bad shot is crucial. Boxing out, rebounding, everything." On consecutive possessions, Iverson penetrated and dished to Corliss Williamson, who missed both shots. Kelvin Cato made one free throw and Howard made two to seal the win, Orlando's seventh in 10 games. "All those losses hurt," said Iverson, who had nine turnovers. "It doesn't matter if it's one point, 30 points or coming back and losing by one." Turkoglu scored 22 points and Pat Garrity added 18 off the bench for the Magic (22-17), who surpassed their win total of last season. Francis scored seven of his 14 points in the last 4 1/2 minutes. Orlando played without forward Grant Hill, who sat out with a bruised right wrist for the second time in three games. Kyle Korver scored 16 points and Kenny Thomas added 12 for Philadelphia, which blew late leads in both its losses here. Thomas left midway through the fourth quarter with a bloody scratch around his left eye. Garrity scored 13 points in a 19-3 run that opened the second quarter and gave Orlando its largest lead at 54-39. The Magic settled for a 65-54 halftime advantage despite Iverson's 22 points.
