Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Dirk Nowitzki would not allow the Dallas Mavericks to be Earl Boykins' next victim. Nowitzki scored 13 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter as the Mavericks rallied for a 95-93 victory over the Denver Nuggets, extending their winning streak to five games. "It was a dogfight," Nowitzki said. "We were just a little lucky at the end. I think we executed down the stretch the way we need to to win the game." Nowitzki scored 10 of Dallas' final 13 points, including a three-point play that provided a 94-93 lead with 17 seconds left. "I was just trying to be aggressive," Nowitzki said. "(Nuggets forward) Kenyon (Martin) was all over my case and really trying to make me put it on the ground and make something happen off the dribble by taking my shot away. That's what I tried to do. They called the charge once. I just kept attacking him and it ended up working out pretty well." On Denver's ensuing possession, Rodney White missed an open 17-foot jumper, forcing the Nuggets to foul Jerry Stackhouse with 4.1 seconds to go. "I got a good look at it and put it on line," said White, who scored six points on 3-of-5 shooting. "I think I aimed it more than I shot it. That's my shot. My shot felt good today. I just rushed it a little bit." Stackhouse made just one free throw, affording Denver and Boykins an opportunity to tie or win the game on a last-second shot. Boykins, who had 43 points over his previous two games - including an NBA-record 15 in overtime Tuesday against Seattle - got an open look as time expired, but his long jumper missed the mark. "I thought the shot was good before I even shot it," Boykins said. "It was in and out. It just didn't happen." The 5-5 Boykins had been held without a basket through the first three quarters but scored seven of his 11 points in the fourth period. His 3-pointer with 1:03 left tied the score at 91-91. "We contained him pretty much the whole game, but as you know he takes big shots," Mavericks guard Jason Terry said. "In the fourth quarter, he got loose a little bit, but he missed the one that counted." Despite a low scoring output compared to his recent heroics, Boykins recorded six assists and three steals in 28 minutes off the bench. His no-look bounce pass early in the fourth quarter resulted in two of Andre Miller's 16 points and a 74-71 lead. "Earl is always a game-changer, whether he's shooting the ball or dribbling the basketball," Nuggets interim coach Michael Cooper said. "He crested some things for us. He had some good looks. You can't fault anyone. We just didn't make the play when they needed to be made." Nowitzki scored 14 points in the first half, including a three-point play with 7.1 seconds left to give Dallas a 47-43 halftime lead. Entering the game with a string of 43 free throws, Nowitzki made his first three before missing in the third quarter. He fell three shy of Steve Nash's franchise record. "I am a little disappointed in my free-throw shooting," said Nowitzki, who missed five of his final 10 from the line. "I was really on a roll for the last couple games. You miss one, then you miss two, then you start thinking about it a little bit and the basket gets a little smaller." Terry scored all 15 of his points in the first half for Dallas, which has gone 3-0 under assistant Avery Johnson since coach Don Nelson left the team to undergo shoulder surgery. The Nuggets closed the third quarter on a 13-4 run to take a 72-71 lead and capitalized on the Mavericks missing their first seven shots of the fourth quarter to increase their advantage to five points before Dallas rebounded. Michael Finley scored 17 points and Stackhouse had 11 and 12 rebounds for the Mavericks, who outrebounded the Nuggets, 50-42. Dallas improved to 9-1 when reaching the 50-rebound plateau. "I tip my hat off to our guys," Johnson said. "Mike did a good job on Earl Boykins. It was just a great overall effort from our guys in these games." Carmelo Anthony, who missed Friday's win over Memphis with a sprained right ankle, returned to Denver's starting lineup. He got off to a hot start with nine points in the first quarter but was scoreless in the fourth period and finished with 14. "My ankle felt good," Anthony said. "(Dallas center Erick) Dampier kicked it early in the game. Regardless of how strong it is, its going to always be on your mind." Already playing without power forward Nene, who was serving the final game of his four-game suspension, the Nuggets lost forward-center Marcus Camby with 2:42 left in the first quarter to an ankle injury. Camby, Denver's leading rebounder with 9.6 per game, rolled his left ankle while attempting to defend a layup by Nowitzki and did not return. Martin had 19 points and 11 rebounds for Denver, which fell to 4-8 under Cooper.
