Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- When it comes to hosting the Denver Nuggets, Ben Wallace and the Detroit Pistons know how to keep a good thing going. Wallace scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Pistons held the Nuggets to a season low in points en route to an 87-70 victory. "When you're not scoring, you have to make it tough on your opponents," Wallace said. "For the most part, we were helping guys, forcing guys to take shots with a hand in their face and rebounding the basketball." The Pistons won their ninth straight home game against the Nuggets dating to March 10, 1995, and broke a four-game losing streak. Ronald Dupree had consecutive dunks during as 17-3 first-quarter run that helped give Detroit a 25-12 lead after 12 minutes. Denver committed nine turnovers without an assist and shot 20 percent (3-of-15) in the period. "Ronald gave us quality minutes because Tayshaun (Prince) was really hurting," Detroit coach Larry Brown said. Prince only played three minutes at Minnesota on Monday before spraining his left ankle. Richard Hamilton also returned after missing the Minnesota game with a bruised thigh. The Nuggets got within 45-42 early in the third quarter before Wallace scored eight points in a 17-5 spurt that extended the advantage to 62-47. Denver was coming off Tuesday's loss to Chicago. The Nuggets are 0-10 in the first of back-to-back games and fell to 4-6 in the second. "I think that we just ran out of gas," Denver interim coach Michael Cooper said. "This team had a very tough game last night. We knew that we were going to have a hard one again tonight. But when you have one of those games in a fatigue set of mind, then it all goes and the bottom fell out of it tonight." Antonio McDyess came off the bench to score 13 points and Carlos Arroyo and Prince each added 12 for the Pistons, who had six players in double figures. "It's great to get a win," Arroyo said. "We've been struggling lately. But the most important thing is that we got a win tonight and we're very happy about that." Earl Boykins scored 14 points and Marcus Camby had 10 with 14 rebounds for Denver, which is 4-10 under Cooper. Carmelo Anthony, who before the game shared a moment with Brown, his Olympic coach last summer, shot just 2-of-13 for five points. "I don't make excuses," Anthony said. "I had a bad shooting night. I don't know. I just couldn't get it going today."
