Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Facing the high-octane Phoenix Suns, Dahntay Jones and rookie Antonio Burks were unlikely heroes for the Memphis Grizzlies. Jones scored a career-high 17 points and Burks scored eight of his season-high 10 in the fourth quarter as the Grizzlies snapped the Suns' five-game winning streak, 108-97. "We take pride in situations like that, when we can step in," Jones said. "We did what we could to help get the win tonight." With 3:05 left and the Grizzlies ahead, 99-92, mild-mannered Suns guard Steve Nash was ejected after picking up two quick technical fouls from referee Jack Nies. Nash, who had seven points and 12 assists, felt he had been fouled by Jason Williams on a drive to the basket before his shot was blocked by Stromile Swift. "I thought I was pushed a little too much going to the basket, and I thought it was an obvious call," said Nash, who claimed he was ejected for the first time in his life. "So I let (Nies) know what I thought, but I didn't think there was enough time to get two technicals. ... I mean, you never want to get two technicals and thrown out with that much time left in a pretty close game." "Nash getting thrown out was crazy," Phoenix guard Joe Johnson said. "We would rather have him in the game, but you can never tell the outcome from one player. You have to give it to the Grizzlies tonight. They played real hard." Phoenix trailed, 76-63, with 2:41 left in the third quarter before going on a 22-5 run to take an 85-81 lead on a 3-pointer by Johnson with 9:11 left. But Memphis - missing injured regulars Pau Gasol, James Posey, Bonzi Wells and Earl Watson - countered with a 13-4 burst to take the lead for good. Burks, who played collegiately at Memphis, capped the run with consecutive 3-pointers for a 94-89 edge with 4:41 left. "I don't think (Burks) was on the Phoenix scouting report tonight - in fact, I don't think he's on anyone's scouting report," Grizzlies forward Shane Battier said. "But it's efforts like that that have been huge for us all year." "My confidence is high regardless of whether I'm playing or not," Burks said. "I mean, I really had nothing to lose tonight. I just went out there and competed." After Nash nailed a 3-pointer to make it 94-92 with 4:22 remaining, Mike Miller countered with a runner and Jones a shot from the arc, and the Grizzlies pulled away. The Suns were held to fewer than 100 points after recording at least 110 in six straight contests, and committed 16 turnovers that led to 18 Grizzlies points. Jason Williams led seven Grizzlies in double figures with 19 points and had eight assists. Lorenzen Wright recorded his second straight double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds for Memphis, which shot 46 percent (41-of-90). Johnson scored a season-high 30 points and Amare Stoudemire added 22 and 19 rebounds for the Suns, who had been 4-0 on a six-game road trip. "They are supposed to shoot in the low percentage and they came out firing," Stoudemire said. "Give them credit. They played well, well enough to beat us. That's all it is."
