Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- In the third quarter, Kyle Korver gave the Philadelphia 76ers a shot in the arm. Korver made four of his five 3-pointers in the third quarter and scored 17 points to lift the 76ers to a 103-85 victory over the punchless Atlanta Hawks, who have lost 12 straight road games. Allen Iverson had 22 points and 12 assists and rookie Andre Iguodala scored 14 points for the 76ers, who were without flu-ridden coach Jim O'Brien but won for the fifth time in their last six home games. "It didn't feel anything different from when Coach O'Brien was thrown out before," said assistant Lester Conner, who has been on O'Brien's staff since the coach's days in Boston and guided the 76ers in this one. "This time, it was from start to finish." Philadelphia led the entire second half but saw the margin reduced to one point midway through the third quarter. Kenny Thomas made a free throw and Iverson added a short jumper before Korver took over. His second 3-pointer of the period doubled the lead to 65-59 before Iverson made a steal and found him for another 3-pointer. After a jumper by Atlanta's Tony Delk, Iverson again set up Korver for a 3-pointer and a 71-62 lead with 2:24 to go. "I just got some good looks and Allen was looking for me on the break," Korver said. "You hit a couple and you keep on shooting." A layup by Samuel Dalembert and dunk by Igoudala made it 75-62 just over a minute later. The Hawks closed to 76-71 early in the final period before Korver stopped that surge with another 3-pointer. That shot triggered a 20-3 surge that featured consecutive thunderous dunks and a 3-pointer by Iguodala and gave the Sixers a 96-74 lead with 4:28 remaining. "The guy (Korver) can shoot the ball. It's not like our guys don't know that," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "I thought that we held him pretty much in check up until that point, and then he got great looks and was able to knock them down." In Wednesday's loss to Houston, Korver was held without a 3-pointer for the first time in 23 games and just the second time this season. He bounced back to make 5-of-8 from the arc, running his season total to 131. "That's the way it works and I wish that it happens more often," Korver said. "The first shot I thought was good but it didn't go in. The last one I shot I thought it was short and it went in. That's the way it goes sometimes, but it was a good night." Dalembert had 12 points and nine rebounds and reserve Corliss Williamson also scored 12 points for Philadelphia, which shot 47 percent (37-of-79), including 9-of-19 from the arc. "I told the guys at the shootaround today to let's try to win easy," Conner said. "We always seem to make things difficult for ourselves. I told them,'Let's win easy and try to get some other guys in.' I think that our bench came in and played extremely well." "I think that we called less plays tonight and that was the biggest thing," Korver said. "We did a lot of quick movement and a lot of get it and go. He (Conner) kind of let Allen just play. When Allen is just playing, that's when we're at our best." Early in the third quarter, Iverson was sent to the floor by a hard foul from Hawks center Obinna Ekezie and came up holding his left shoulder, an injury that forced him to miss three games last month. He did not leave the game and X-rays afterward were negative, although he will be re-evaluated Saturday. Antoine Walker scored 14 points for the Hawks, who have lost six of their last seven games. They have been held below 90 points six times during that stretch, including the last four. Atlanta forward Al Harrington, who averages 17.2 points per game, was held to seven on 2-of-12 shooting. Point guard Tyronn Lue suffered a strained left Achilles tendon late in the third quarter and did not return.
