Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The early departure of Gilbert Arenas gave Jalen Rose a chance to shine. Rose scored 12 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter as the Toronto Raptors came back from a 22-point deficit for a 103-100 victory over the Washington Wizards, who have lost a season-high four straight games. The Raptors, who stormed back for the second straight game, tied a franchise record for biggest comeback victory and ended a six-game losing streak in the series to avoid a season sweep. "Our guys just don't quit," said Raptors coach Sam Mitchell, whose team erased a 19-point deficit in Wednesday's win at Indiana. "We started making shots and obviously Arenas getting thrown out was huge because he was on roll." Arenas, who scored all 21 of his points in the first half, was ejected by referee Bill Kennedy for a second technical foul with 4:39 left in the third quarter. Toronto went on to outscore Washington, 44-26, the rest of the game. Arenas claimed after the game he did not speak to Kennedy prior to the first of his first of two technical fouls. "I just slapped the ball and got my first technical and then passed him the ball when he wasn't looking," Arenas said. "It obviously hurt us a lot. They (Toronto) fed off my ejection, got energy and ended up pulling the game out." "I think we should send Arenas a Christmas card for getting ejected," Rose said. "We caught a big break with him being ejected. Our team does have character and we did fight back. Once we started making the run, I think it took the spirit away from their team." Rafer Alston, who played in his first contest since his two-game team suspension, scored all 16 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer with 1:48 remaining to bring Toronto within 98-97. "Coach wanted me to attack," Alston said. "When you are down 10 or 11 points, you have to get back to the basket." Rose sank a pair of free throws with 1:05 to go, putting Toronto in front, 99-98, before Donyell Marshall was credited with a 3-pointer on a goaltending call against Antawn Jamison with 28 seconds left. Marshall scored 20 points off the bench and Chris Bosh added 16 and 11 rebounds for Toronto, which won its first game in 23 outings this season when allowing an opponent to score at least 100 points. Jamison scored 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Jarvis Hayes scored 18 points for Washington, which shot a season-high 68 percent (25-of-37) from the floor in the first half, taking a 58-43 lead. "The way we had this game all the way into the fourth quarter, that has to be the worst loss of the season," Hayes said. Jamison didn't want to place the blame for the loss solely on Arenas' ejection. "You have to lay the responsibility on the ones who didn't get it done, particularly me," Jamison said. "If we can't win without Gilbert when we have a 13-point lead near the fourth quarter, then we aren't a very good team. It's my job to find a way to get it done. This one definitely hurts."
