Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Mike Woodson talked about it before the game. The Atlanta Hawks proved him prophetic during the contest. Falling apart late in the third quarter, including allowing a five-point possession, the Hawks continued their losing ways, dropping an 84-79 decision to the Indiana Pacers. Prior to seeing his team lose for the 37th time in 46 games this season, Atlanta coach Mike Woodson preached that his team has played well at times only to be done in by stretches in a contest where they come completely apart. In this contest, the stretch came late in the third quarter and the Hawks never recovered. Atlanta was leading 59-51 with 1:46 left in the third quarter when two free throws by reserve Eddie Gill ignited an 18-4 burst. Included in that span was a 3-pointer by Gill with 79 seconds left in the period, Kevin Willis was whistled for a foul away from the ball and then was tagged with a technical for arguing the call. For a moment, it looked as if the referees were about to give the hapless Hawks a break when they waved off the three-pointer. But Gill successfully lobbied the officials and the bucket was allowed. "The guy who actually called the foul, obviously didn't see me shoot it," Gill said. "I was at least going to give it a try. We were fortunate to come up with the call and gain momentum." The five-point swing got Indiana within 59-58 and by the time Gill buried his second 3-pointer of the contest, 2 1/2 minutes into the final period, the Pacers were ahead 69-63. Atlanta never got closer than three points the rest of the way. "That was a huge play," Woodson said. "I look at the stat sheet, and we won points in the paint, we outrebounded them, only six turnovers for the night, we out-assisted them, how did we lose that game? I thought that one play hurt us." "That (play) really gave us some life," added Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle. "You can score five points with the clock not running. That's a big deal when you're down (six)." Jermaine O'Neal had a huge game for the Pacers (22-24), who have won two straight following a six-game losing streak. O'Neal had 38 points - 12 in the fourth quarter - and Gill finished with 10. "That's what I'm expected to do," O'Neal said. "When I am going, my team expects me to make plays. I was fortunate to make plays (tonight)." "He's obviously the leader of our team," Gill added. "We sink or swim with him. I wouldn't see it any other way." Al Harrington, who missed two key free throws in the waning seconds, and Antoine Walker had 26 points apiece for Atlanta. "I could have made a couple of plays that I messed up on that could have possibly won the game for us," Harrington said. "At the end of the day, we applaud the effort, but no cigar." The Hawks shot just 40 percent (33-of-83) and missed half of their 18 free throws. "I think the end of the third quarter is what lost the game for us," Walker said. "We had an eight-point lead, and that one play where they got five points, that kind of killed the momentum."
