Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- After a slow start, LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers got back on track. James scored 18 of his 30 in the second half and Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored seven of his 14 in the fourth quarter as the Cavaliers posted a 101-92 victory over the Orlando Magic. After losing three of its last four games, the victory was a welcome site for James, who has lofty visions for his young team. "We're on a pace to win 50-plus games," said James, who recorded his 11th 30-point game of the season and second in a row. "Right now, we're trying to get 30 (wins) before the (all-star) break." An Eastern Conference All-Star starter, James responded after a first half in which he shot just 3-of-11 by scoring eight points and dishing out five assists in the third quarter as Cleveland took the lead for good. "We picked up our defense," Cleveland coach Paul Silas said. "I thought they got a little bit tired by having played last night." "I thought that Cleveland really picked it up in the second half," Orlando coach Johnny Davis said. "We didn't do a good job of taking care of the basketball and we also allowed them too many second shots." Cleveland, which had lost its last two games, struggled to make baskets in the first half, connecting on just 36 percent (16-of-44) of its shots from the floor while Orlando made 56 percent (22-of-39). But the Cavaliers kept the score close by making 17-of-18 free throws and trailed just 51-50 at the half. Drew Gooden helped defeat his former club by notching 16 points and 10 rebounds, his seventh straight double-double. The Cavaliers led 89-78 with 7:23 to go when the Magic went on an 11-3 spurt. Rookie Dwight Howard, who scored five of his 14 points during the spurt, split a pair of free throws with 2:06 left to trim Orlando's deficit to 92-89. But Ilgauskas stepped up for Cleveland, pounding out a pair of inside baskets on the Cavaliers' next two possessions. "Those were huge baskets for us," Gooden said. "They had us out of sync with a zone and we had had a couple of turnovers." "It was good to see Z (Ilgauskas) get some love, and make the buckets down the stretch," James said. Cleveland's defense on Orlando star Steve Francis, who scored just 15 points, was a key to the victory. Francis burned the Cavaliers for 30 points Tuesday in a 105-102 Magic victory in Orlando. "We trapped him whenever he got it so he just couldn't pick us apart," Silas said. "We tried to send as many guys as we could at him," James said. Grant Hill, who will start alongside James in the All-Star Game, scored 17 points for the Magic. Former Cavalier Tony Battie scored all 14 points of his points in the first half. "We didn't play particularly well coming off a loss last night (in Boston)," said Francis, who dished out nine assists. "They were just better than us down the stretch," Hill said. "We just didn't take care of business. You've got to be sharper on the road and we weren't."
