Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- This time, a rally by the Los Angeles Lakers ended with a victory. Lamar Odom scored 16 points and grabbed 19 rebounds and Chucky Atkins hit a pair of huge shots as the Lakers rallied late for a 104-103 overtime victory over the New Jersey Nets. The Lakers closed regulation with an 8-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Atkins that tied it, 92-92, with 12 seconds to play. "We needed a three. Why go for anything other than a three?" Atkins said. "Chucky Atkins - guts," Odom said. The Nets still had a chance to win in regulation, but Ron Mercer missed a jumper from the top of the key off a feed from a driving Vince Carter as New Jersey went to overtime in its second straight game. In their last two games, the Lakers rallied from double-digit deficits to move into position to win, only to come up short. In this one, the Lakers used an improbable shot by Atkins to end a three-game slide. After Caron Butler's 3-pointer gave Los Angeles a 102-101 lead, the Lakers were scrambling to shoot before the shot clock expired. Atkins started to drive left and banked a running 17-footer to extend the lead with 36 seconds to go. "In a situation like that, you just want to get an opportunity," Atkins said. "I'm one of the better guys on this team at creating a shot like that." Carter, who scored a season-high 43 points in Monday's overtime win over Philadelphia, made two free throws to pull the Nets within one and had a chance to win the game but missed a long jumper. As the ball caromed toward the Nets bench, Atkins appeared to knock down New Jersey's Jacque Vaughn. No foul was called, despite petitions to all three referees by Nets coach Lawrence Frank. "The referees didn't see it (as a foul), so we'll go with their decision," Frank said. When asked if he and Vaughn were pushing and shoving, Atkins explained, "It was a little bit of both, and a no-call." The Lakers earned their first win in four games since coach Frank Hamblen permanently took over for Rudy Tomjanovich. "This is the third close game in a row we have played," Hamblen said. "Our guys talked about it and said we have to D up to win it. I sure would like to have a laugher this season." Carter scored 15 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter and overtime but made just 9-of-23 shots. He played just four minutes in the third quarter because of foul trouble. "Shots weren't falling for us late," Carter said. "We gave up 27 points in the fourth quarter and they made their run. And we couldn't hold them off." Jones scored 20 points, Luke Walton added 17 off the bench and Atkins 14 for the Lakers, who improved to 28-0 since 1998 when they have six or more players in double figures. Jason Kidd added his second consecutive triple-double, his fourth of the season and 63rd of his career with a season-high 28 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists. It is the eighth time in his career Kidd has posted triple-doubles in back-to-back games. "The one thing we can learn from this game is, the game is never over," Kidd said. "We have to finish them out."
