Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- A lot has changed off the court in eight months. Not much has changed on it. Tayshaun Prince led an early barrage as the Detroit Pistons posted an easy 103-81 triumph over the Los Angeles Lakers. It marked the first meeting between the teams since the NBA Finals in June, when the underdog Pistons shocked the Lakers in five games. While the Pistons brought back essentially the same team, the Lakers have a completely new look. Stars Shaquille O'Neal, Karl Malone, Gary Payton and coach Phil Jackson no longer are with the team and Kobe Bryant missed his 14th straight game with a severely sprained ankle. "That team is totally different," said Pistons point guard Chauncey Billups, who had 15 points and a season-high 11 assists. "But you know that they're dangerous. We didn't let them get into a rhythm tonight and we had some success." The Pistons (29-19) had no trouble with the new-look Lakers (25-23), building an 18-2 lead less than five minutes into the contest and leading by as many as 27 points in the third quarter. "I think the world champion, rested Detroit Pistons played a team that's fighting for its life to make the playoffs on their fourth game in five nights," said Lakers interim coach Frank Hamblen, who fell to 1-4 since replacing Rudy Tomjanovich. Prince scored 15 of his 25 points in the first quarter, helping the Pistons open a 30-14 cushion. He made 11-of-20 shots overall. The 20 field goals attempted was a career high. "Tayshaun was on fire in the first half," Lakers guard Caron Butler said. "He really played about as well as anyone I have ever seen play." Rasheed Wallace collected 23 points and a season-high 15 rebounds for his 10th double-double and Ben Wallace had 15 boards for the Pistons, who won for the sixth time in seven games overall. "(Things are) coming together slowly but surely," Rasheed Wallace said. "We still have a long way to go to get to where we were at last year, but we're making progress." Lamar Odom had 17 points and nine rebounds for Los Angeles, which fell to 1-3 on a five-game road trip. The Lakers were coming off Wednesday's overtime victory over New Jersey and fell to 3-8 in the second of back-to-back games. The Lakers shot 39 percent (32-of-82), including a woeful 3-of-16 from the arc. With a 51-35 cushion at the half, the Pistons put away the game with an 18-7 run to start the third quarter, capped by Prince's basket to take their biggest lead. Richard Hamilton added 11 points for the Pistons, who shot 44 percent (41-of-93) and went 9-of-21 from the arc.
