Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Ricky Davis was big off the bench, Raef LaFrentz was big in the third quarter and the New York Knicks came up small again. Davis scored 25 points and LaFrentz sparked a decisive third quarter as the Boston Celtics posted an easy 111-94 victory over the Knicks. Davis scored 10 points in the second period as the Celtics built a 57-51 halftime lead. Boston stretched the advantage to 84-62 after three quarters by holding New York to just 11 points on 4-of-15 shooting and forcing six turnovers. "We made a run and we just kept going," Davis said. "Everybody was shooting the ball good and we were sharing the ball and we were out there having fun. We played good defense and made them take tough shots." LaFrentz keyed the third-quarter surge with seven points and seven rebounds as the Celtics exploded on a 19-5 run, taking a 76-56 lead with 4:30 left in the quarter. In the period, the Knicks only had six rebounds while the Celtics snared 18. "When you've got a team that's struggling, you want to take it to them early," said Celtics captain Paul Pierce, who finished with 17 points. "When you're a losing team and you're down, you tend to lose your confidence. We wanted to come out strong in the third quarter knowing that we could take this game away if we could push the lead." The game was a matchup of teams heading in opposite directions in the mediocre Atlantic Division. New York fell to 3-18 since New Year's Day and Boston has won five of six games to open a 1 1/2-game lead over Philadelphia. "We could have played better, we could have played much better," New York coach Herb Williams said. "It's always disappointing when you lose. When you lose a division game, it's like a double whammy. We have got to make that up somewhere." The win was Boston's fourth straight over New York and gave the Celtics (26-25) a winning record for the first time since they were 3-2 on November 12. LaFrentz had 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Celtics, who had six scorers in double figures. Rookie Tony Allen and Gary Payton each had 12 and Jiri Welsch added 10 off the bench. New York's Stephon Marbury scored 31 points, his fifth straight game with at least 30 or more points. Marbury was 8-of-18 from the field, 15-of-18 from the line and added 10 assists. "We definitely took a step back tonight," said Marbury, who played the entire second half. "We didn't play no where near as hard as we played the previous games. For whatever reason our effort was sporadic." Mike Sweetney scored 19 points and Kurt Thomas added 16 for the Knicks.
