Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Bonzi Wells once again played a major role in beating his former team. Wells scored 13 points and tied a career high with 14 rebounds as the Memphis Grizzlies rallied for an 88-82 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. In their only previous meeting this season, the Grizzlies posted a 101-82 victory over the Trail Blazers on November 17 behind a season-high 25 points from Wells, who was traded from Portland to Memphis last season. This time, Wells made just 4-of-16 shots but collected six offensive rebounds and three steals. "(Portland) is real physical, and that's the way I love to play," Wells said. "Coach (Mike Fratello) has been on my back about getting boards so I hope I did well for him tonight." "Bonzi had a great game tonight," Grizzlies forward Brian Cardinal said. "He had a great game and that is really good to see against his old team." With Memphis trailing, 77-71, with seven minutes remaining, Wells started a 9-0 run by splitting two free throws. His dunk made it 77-75 less than two minutes later, and Cardinal's 3-pointer gave the Grizzlies a 78-77 lead with 4:21 remaining. Cardinal, who scored seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter, added another shot from the arc to break an 80-80 tie with 2:58 left. "It was exciting," Cardinal said. "I was struggling shooting tonight, we all were. I was just glad to hit those two shots and help us out. The best part about this team is that we have guys off the bench that can step up ... and tonight I was able to hit a couple of big shots." Wells rebounded Nick Van Exel's potential tying baseline runner with 45 seconds left and ignited a break that ended with a 3-pointer by Mike Miller for an 87-82 lead. With 9:20 remaining and a 75-68 advantage, Portland had a chance to extend its lead, but Darius Miles missed a pair of free throws. On its next possession, Ruben Patterson missed two free throws and Memphis fired back with a 18-5 run to close the game. Portland shot 58 percent (14-of-24) from the line. "Execution went down," Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We're at the foul line twice, up six, and we miss two free throws both times. Execution just went down as the game went on. That really hurts." "That's basketball," Patterson said. "You catch fire one half and not the other. ... It's just a disappointing loss. We didn't finish off the game like we should have." Portland outscored Memphis on the fast break, 25-9, but committed 22 turnovers leading to 21 points for the Grizzlies. "The pace had an effect on us," Cheeks said. "I think we rushed the ball down the floor and couldn't continue to score, so we ended up turning the ball over. ... You're not going to win a lot of games with (22) turnovers." Memphis' Stromile Swift scored 13 of his season-high 23 points in the second quarter. He also added eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Miller added 22 for the Grizzlies, who have won 16 of their last 20 games. Zach Randolph had 26 points and 12 rebounds and Patterson scored 20 points for the Trail Blazers, who opened a four-game trip with their sixth straight road loss. "This is the first time our offense has failed us," Portland guard Damon Stoudamire said. "We just didn't get it done tonight and they took advantage of it. We've got to execute and work on it."
