Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Kobe Bryant's return was not enough to overcome LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Bryant scored 26 points in his first game in a month but James scored 21 of his 25 in the second half, when the Cavaliers pulled away for a 103-89 victory over the road-weary Los Angeles Lakers. All-Star Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 30 points on 11-of-13 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who improved to 19-5 at home. On January 13, Bryant suffered a severely sprained right ankle in the first quarter of a home victory over Cleveland. Los Angeles went 6-8 without its superstar, who practiced Saturday and made his return on national television. Bryant made 7-of-22 shots and appeared a bit out of rhythm at times. He played 40 minutes and was aggressive, making all 11 of his free throws. But he sputtered down the stretch, scoring just two points in the fourth quarter. "I was still able to get to the basket," Bryant said. "I just didn't have the lift. ... There were certain points when I was wheezing a little bit." "Kobe could probably take a year off and step right in there and still probably be a very effective player," Lakers interim coach Frank Hamblen said. James shook off a sluggish first half to spark the Cavaliers in the second half. The All-Star added nine assists and eight rebounds and had a pair of buckets in a 9-0 burst that gave Cleveland an 85-72 lead with 7:49 to play. "LeBron was slow in getting started there in the first half," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "Then he came in the second half and just took the game over." "I was just waiting for my time and waiting for an opportunity for me to take over and I was able to do that in the second half," James said. Drew Gooden had 12 points and 10 rebounds, Sasha Pavlovic scored 12 points and Jeff McInnis added 11 and nine assists for the Cavaliers, who had lost 11 of the last 12 meetings between the clubs. Lamar Odom had 19 points and nine boards for the Lakers, who shot just 38 percent (31-of-81) and allowed the Cavaliers to shot 53 percent (39-of-74). Los Angeles went 1-4 on its road trip. "If we would have had Kobe on this road trip, I think we could have won two, maybe three," Hamblen said. "I was very disappointed with the way we defended. Maybe our players can't do it." Bryant's dunk with just under one minute to play in the third quarter pulled the Lakers within 72-67. "I started trusting (my ankle) a little bit more in the third quarter," he said. "He was a little rusty," Silas said. "It kind of surprised me that he played as much as he did. But that's Kobe." Ilgauskas also scored four points in Cleveland's decisive surge. Los Angeles got no closer than five points thereafter. "We couldn't stop Dr. Ilgauskas," Hamblen said. "Is that what you call him, Dr. Z? Dr. Z was too much for us."
