Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Hawks had trouble containing Drew Gooden and Zydrunas Ilgauskas inside. They had trouble slowing down LeBron James anywhere. James scored 28 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers swept the Hawks for the first time since the 1992-93 season with a 111-89 victory. "They were obviously a little tired from having played a tough game last night," Cleveland coach Paul Silas said. "They stuck with us the first half, but the second half I thought they ran out of gas a little bit." Gooden collected 19 points and 11 rebounds and Ilgauskas added 18 and 13 - including a Gund Arena-record 12 offensive boards - for the Cavaliers (30-20). "(Ilgauskas) is out there playing volleyball," Gooden said. "He has a nice soft touch around the basket, and he's first to the ball always." "We knew we had an advantage in size and we tried to capitalize on that," Ilgauskas said. Ilgauskas also tied Michael Cage's franchise record for offensive rebounds in a contest, set at Atlanta on April 16, 1996. "A franchise-record 12 offensive rebounds? Most of them were from his own (missed) shots," James joked. Cleveland had not posted 30 wins before the All-Star break since the 1992-93 campaign, when it finished 54-28 and reached the Eastern Conference semifinals. "That was our goal (to win 30 games before the break)," Silas said. "After tomorrow's game (at Minnesota) we'll have 31 more games to play, and we haven't hit a string of games yet where we can win six or seven in a row." "We have played 50 games and we have 32 games left," James said. "Our goal for right now is to try to get home-court advantage for the playoffs." Cleveland held a 55-50 lead at the break and opened a 75-60 cushion on a pair of free throws by Sasha Pavlovic with 2:59 remaining in the third quarter. The Cavaliers pushed the advantage to as many as 27 points early in the fourth quarter en route to capping a 4-1 homestand. With 36 seconds left in the third quarter, Pavlovic brought the crowd to its feet with a no-look, behind-the-back pass to Gooden for a layup. James called it a night with 8:44 left after draining back-to-back 3-pointers. "We wanted to put this game away early," James said. "We knew (the Hawks) had played last night and have had a lot of injuries." Antoine Walker had 17 of his 21 points and eight of his 10 rebounds in the first half for the Hawks, who lost their fourth straight game. "We've been in a lot of ballgames and, for whatever reasons, we have one bad quarter or we have a bad four or five minutes that bury us," Atlanta coach Mike Woodson said. The Hawks have lost seven in a row in the series. "This is a great experience playing against players like Jeff McInnis, LeBron James and Ilgauskas," said Hawks rookie forward Josh Smith, who scored 11 points. "We're just learning how to be men and grow up fast."
