Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Andre Miller helped the Denver Nuggets end a 17-year drought against the Boston Celtics. Miller scored 22 points in three quarters and was among four players in double figures as the Nuggets posted a 107-86 victory over the Celtics. Denver took both meetings from Boston for the first time since the 1987-1988 season as it won its season-high fifth consecutive home game. Playing their first contest after the All-Star break, the Nuggets took the lead for good by going on a 17-4 run in the first quarter, highlighted by eight points from Miller, for a 23-14 advantage. "I just figured I'd come out and be aggressive and make plays, Miller said. "I didn't want the game to go where we're fighting for the lead or it is a close game. So I took it upon myself to be aggressive and make plays for everybody." "The pace of the game was great," Denver coach George Karl said. "Andre Miller set a great pace for us at the start of the game and I thought the focus and intensity was great." Celtics coach Doc Rivers was ejected at the start of halftime when he picked up a pair of technical fouls for arguing foul calls. In the first half, Denver shot 28 free throws to Boston's nine. "It probably contributed to my frustration," Rivers said. "I didn't think we were getting great calls. But I didn't think it was the refs' fault we lost the game. They (the Nuggets) were more physical and tough and I thought we played soft the whole game." The Nuggets scored 37 points in the third quarter, closing with a 13-2 spurt on consecutive 3-pointers by Bryon Russell and DerMarr Johnson for a 94-67 lead. "I just stopped and threw it up," Johnson said. "But I thought it was going to be too late. The Celtics played last night and I thought they were tired." Anthony scored 19 points and Kenyon Martin added 18 with 13 rebounds for the Nuggets, who have won eight of 12 since Karl took over as coach and are 9-1 at home against the Eastern Conference. "This was the first game after the break," Martin said. "I think we did an excellent job. We've got to treat every game like it's our last. Like there's no tomorrow. We've got to play desperate." Rookie Delonte West came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points and Paul Pierce added 16 for Boston, which fell under .500 and into a virtual first place tie with Philadelphia in the Atlantic Division. "We didn't play with any energy from the start," Pierce said. "We didn't match their energy and it was just one of those nights where we took a (butt)-whipping."
