Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Tony Parker would not allow the San Antonio Spurs to fall to 0-3 against the Houston Rockets this season. Parker scored 22 points and led a key late run as the Spurs pulled away from the Rockets, 99-81, for their 24th win in 25 home games this season. Tim Duncan contributed 30 points and 11 rebounds and fellow All-Star Manu Ginobili added 18 points for the Spurs, who entered the game a league-best 42-12 but 0-2 against the Rockets. "The rest was good for Tim and Manu," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Of course they had all the All-Star stuff, but it's not that tough there. I think they feel pretty good after their effort tonight. The defense was there for Tim and Manu tonight, and overall they played good." "We did a really good job tonight, and this is really how we wanted to start the second half of the season," Duncan said. "We were very steady with both our offense and our defense tonight." Houston's Tracy McGrady scored 13 points in the final 35 seconds to erase a late 10-point deficit in an 81-80 victory on December 9, and the Rockets held the Spurs to a season-low 67 points on January 15. In this one, the Spurs held just a 75-74 edge after a turnaround jumper by McGrady with 6:56 remaining, but Rasho Nesterovic made a layup 17 seconds later to trigger a 14-3 run. Parker scored six points during the burst, including a fast-break dunk off a steal that opened an 89-77 advantage with 3:07 left. "I was trying to pressure the ball, and I was able to get the steal and finish at the other end," Parker said. "I know that the fans get mad when I only do layups on fast breaks, so I will try to do that a little more often." "He was a real competitor tonight," Popovich said of Parker, who had five steals. "His defense sealed the game. He played hard all night, but he was big for us on the defensive end. No one ever notices that, they only see the offense. He set the tone for us." McGrady scored 22 points and fellow All-Star Yao Ming added 20 for the Rockets, who allowed the Spurs to shoot 51 percent (35-of-69). The Rockets have lost back-to-back games after entering the All-Star break on an eight-game winning streak. "We're disappointed, obviously," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We didn't play very well, and like I said, (the Spurs) had another level. That's why they are the best team in the league." McGrady, who made only 7-of-21 shots, did not like his performance. "I think I'm being too cautious," McGrady said. "That's the No. 1 thing with me right now. I get a shot at any given time, but I'm trying to stay within the offense and get other guys involved. That's the way we've been winning lately. "I didn't have to score 25 to 30 points but sometimes it will hurt us because I do need to be more effective and stop being so passive like I've been the last two games." Houston held a 26-21 lead after one quarter and took a 45-42 edge into the break. "We started off on the right track by winning tonight, but we struggled in the first half," Duncan said. "They shot near 55 percent in the first half, so we need to focus on getting the other team to shoot in the 40 percent range."
