Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Earl Boykins and Marcus Camby led the Denver Nuggets' charge from the free throw line. The Nuggets rallied twice in the fourth quarter and Boykins and Camby each connected on a pair of free throws in overtime for a 97-94 victory over the struggling Memphis Grizzlies. Camby, who collected 17 points and 15 rebounds, responded to an early overtime bucket with an alley-oop basket, then gave Denver the lead for good, 95-93, with his free throws at the 1:08 mark. "We just tried to claw and scrap and grind this one out," Camby said. "They were fouling us and we were able to get to the penalty early (in the fourth quarter) and then in overtime. That was pretty much the ballgame." Boykins, second in the NBA in free-throw shooting, made it a three-point game with his foul shots with 10 seconds to go. Playing his first game since returning from the injured list, guard James Posey missed an off-balance 3-pointer as the clock ran out, sending the Grizzlies to their fourth straight loss. Boykins made 15-of-16 free throws to lead Denver's 44-of-52 effort from the line, which compensated for 34 percent (25-of-73) floor shooting. "Coach Karl stressed to us to get to the hole and to be aggressive, and tonight we were," Boykins said. "We shot the ball horrible, but because of the free throws we were able to get the win." Trailing 77-66 with just over nine minutes to go, Denver went on an 13-3 burst over the next 4 1/2 minutes. But Memphis scored the next seven points, capped by an alley-oop by Lorenzen Wright, for an 87-79 advantage with 2:53 left. Andre Miller led the second comeback with six of his 15 points in the last three minutes of regulation. After Jason Williams missed a pair of free throws with 55 seconds left that could have given Memphis five-point lead, Miller capped the rally he drove down the right side and was fouled by Brian Cardinal on a layup. "It's just instincts," Cardinal said. "You see a guy going to the basket and you want to make the play. But a split second after it happened, I was thinking, 'What in God's name did I just do?' We had a chance to win, and I definitely hold myself accountable." "That was just a big play," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "You know, I thought we would have to do it a different way. It was just a tremendous shot." Miller completed the three-point play to tie the game, 91-91, with 13 seconds left. Williams had a chance to win it, but his jumper from left of the key bounced off the iron. The Grizzlies totally dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Nuggets, 31-12, to erase a 50-40 halftime deficit. Brian Cardinal made four 3-pointers and scored 14 of his season-high 27 points in the period. "When they outscored us like that in the third, we knew we had to do something different," Denver forward Kenyon Martin said. "Andre made a big bucket, DerMarr Johnson hit a three, Earl made free throws - everyone contributed, that's encouraging. This was our most impressive win." "This was a great win for us, an important win," Karl said. "If we make the playoffs, we're going to remember this win." Lorenzen Wright grabbed a season-high 18 rebounds for Grizzlies, who shot 39 percent (33-of-83), their fifth straight game below 40 percent. Shane Battier added 17 points and nine rebounds.
