Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- It seemed like old times for Antoine Walker and the Boston Celtics. Walker scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in his first game back with Boston, leading the Celtics to a 109-102 victory over the Utah Jazz. Walker, who spent stellar seven seasons with Boston from 1996-2003, was reacquired from Atlanta on Thursday for Gary Payton, Tom Gugliotta, Michael Stewart and a draft pick. With rookie Al Jefferson wearing his old No. 8, Walker wore No. 88 in his return. "Doc (coach Doc Rivers) made it really easy for me today," Walker said. "He just told the team we were going to stay away from a lot of sets they (usually) run and we just kept it simple. Things worked out well. This is a big win for us." In the third quarter, Walker made five consecutive baskets and scored 14 points while the Celtics shot 67 percent (12-of-18) from the floor, closing within 80-78. But with Walker and Paul Pierce on the bench, Boston pulled ahead for good. With four reserves on the floor, the Celtics opened the final period on a 14-2 run, highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers from Marcus Banks and one from rookie Delonte West for a 92-82 lead with 8:15 remaining. "That's a credit to what these guys have already accomplished, having a bench that can come in and give us opportunities to rest," Walker said. "That's big for us, going into the fourth quarter in the last six or seven minutes, to have energy to finish plays and make plays late in the game." "I thought that was the biggest difference in the whole game," Rivers said. "Paul was in foul trouble. Tony (Allen) was in foul trouble. Raef (LaFrentz) was in foul trouble and the second unit guys basically got the lead and extended the lead." Keith McLeod scored five straight points during an 11-2 run as Utah to cut the deficit to 103-102 with 36 seconds left. After a pair of free throws by Mark Blount, the Jazz had a chance to tie the game with 16 seconds left. But Matt Harpring committed a turnover, and Blount and Ricky Davis added a pair of free throws apiece to seal the victory. "We told (Harpring) to take a two," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "But we had to get the ball first. We did a poor job of executing the play. In that situation, you really have to be tough on the screens, and we really didn't have anything." Davis came off the bench to score 17 points for the Celtics, who moved back to the .500 mark and have a one-game lead over Philadelphia in the weak Atlantic Division. Walker, who joined the team immediately after learning of the trade, was 10-of-18 from the floor and the only player to reach double figures in rebounds, providing a much-needed post presence for the Celtics. "That's what he does," Rivers said. "(He is) a great rebounder. He's quick to the ball and that was big for us. You know what's nice with 'Toine? We had somewhere to go in the post. That was really nice. That's something that obviously we haven't been able to do." "We had a difficult time trying to guard and get them back out of the middle," Sloan said. "They hurt us a great deal on the inside in the second half." Delonte West, making his first career start in place of the departed Gary Payton, scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 38 minutes. "It's a team sport," West said. "When one man goes down, somebody's got to step up. I do what my team needs. When coaches call on you, you've got to be ready to play. Now, they expect Marcus (Banks) and myself to come out and fill big some big shoes." Andrei Kirilenko scored a season-high 29 points, Harpring added 18 and McLeod 14 for the Jazz, who were swept by the Celtics for the first time since the 1987-1988 season.
