Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- The Denver Nuggets capitalized on a couple of charges and put another win in the bank. Bryon Russell and Eduardo Najera drew key fouls in the waning moments and Carmelo Anthony had 17 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter as the Nuggets ran their winning streak to three games with a 94-93 triumph over the New Orleans Hornets. In closing the game with a 14-7 run, Denver (27-29) won for the 10th time in 14 games under new coach George Karl. The Nuggets also did it without starting forward Kenyon Martin, who was ejected with 10:27 remaining and Denver trailing 74-67. With Martin out, the other Nuggets stepped up as Anthony made 10-of-10 free throws in the period. But it was three heady defensive plays that proved to be the difference. With the game tied, 90-90, Russell drew a questionable foul on Speedy Claxton with 50 seconds to go. The Nuggets swingman appeared to have a foot in the circle under the basket and may not have had his feet set. But the call stood and Russell hit a wild floater at the other end to give Denver the lead for good. "I thought Bryon was still moving, but they didn't call it," said Claxton, who was playing his first game with the Hornets after being obtained Thursday from the Golden State Warriors. "I didn't think he could hang in the air that long," Karl said of Russell, in his 12th NBA season. "I thought he was going to fall on the ground." With a chance for New Orleans to tie, Marcus Camby blocked Dan Dickau's driving layup out of bounds with 10 seconds remaining, then Najera - who was acquired Thursday just prior to the trade deadline - drew a charge on Dickau with 5.3 seconds remaining. Boykins, the league's No. 2 free-throw shooter, made 2-of-2 with 4.6 seconds remaining for a 94-90 lead that made Dickau's 3-pointer at the buzzer inconsequential. "Bryon Russell makes one charge, which was huge, and I thought (Najera) really read the play well, and with Marcus behind him they have a lot of confidence stepping to the ball," Karl said. It was the 10th time this season that Denver won after trailing by 10 or more points. The Hornets' biggest lead was 78-67 with 10:14 remaining. "Games like this are draining," Anthony said. "I want to keep winning, but we don't want to have to keeping fighting back like that." Camby grabbed 10 rebounds, had five of his seven blocks in the second half and drew praise from Karl. "Marcus - what a great player he is, defensively at the end of games," Karl said. "Wow. He doesn't let anybody get shots off of him." Dickau led New Orleans (11-44) with 22 points but no other starter had more than nine. Three New Orleans reserves scored in double figures, including Casey Jacobsen with 15. Denver took advantage of the Hornets' 15 fourth-quarter fouls, going 14-of-14 from the line to cap a game in which they went 33-for-36 from the line. "All of the things that we talk about and all of the things that we work on in practice, they have to start registering," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "We have to understand that we don't have that big of a margin for error. We have to do all of the little things (right to win)."
