Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady, Mike James and the Houston Rockets ended the suspense early. McGrady scored 19 of his 32 points and the recently acquired James 16 of his 26 by halftime as the Rockets opened up a huge lead and cruised to a 119-89 triumph over the Chicago Bulls. Houston, which had lost its first three games after the All-Star break, shot 70 percent (14-of-20) to open a 36-24 lead after one quarter and pushed the advantage to 66-39 at the break. "Coming in here off a three-game skid, we wanted to start this road trip off right," said McGrady, whose team was starting a stretch in which it plays six of seven games on the road, including visits to league powers Seattle, Phoenix and Sacramento. "We have a crucial schedule ahead of us and the games we should win, we got to win them." "We knew they had a rest stretch for a couple games, and we knew they were going to be ready and we were probably going to get their best," Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. "We tried to impress that on our guys. Obviously, we did not do a good enough job." The Rockets, who shot 61 percent (26-of-43) in the first half, led by as many as 39 points in the fourth quarter and finished at 56 percent (45-of-81). "It happens sometimes," James said of the blowout. "(The Bulls) had been playing really good ball and they'll continue to play really good ball. But tonight, we wanted it a little bit more." McGrady made 12-of-21 attempts and James - whom the Rockets acquired from Milwaukee just before last Thursday's trade deadline - 11-of-15. "James was wide open, (Jon) Barry, you can go right down the list," Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. "We were very fortunate that they only scored 119 on us the way we played. They just did whatever they wanted to do." Eddy Curry scored 14 of his 17 points in the first quarter for the Bulls, who had won 11 of their previous 12 home games and six of seven overall. Chicago, which absorbed its largest margin of defeat of the season - shot just 37 percent (29-of-78). "Some nights you don't have it defensively," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We're fourth in the league in field-goal defense. We had one of those nights the other night against Utah, and some nights it's just not there. Tonight for the Bulls, it was just not their night." Bulls rookie Luol Deng sprained his right ankle stepping on Rockets center Yao Ming's foot 37 seconds into the game. He had to be helped off the court and did not return. Chicago reserve forward-center Tyson Chandler managed just two points in 16 minutes and made an obscene gesture to referee Sean Corbin after being called for a blocking foul in the third quarter. "I flipped off the ref, but if I had it to do all over again, I would flip off myself and the rest of my teammates," Chandler said. "That was just my frustration taking off on the ref."
