Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The return of Antoine Walker to FleetCenter brought a rousing welcome from a sellout crowd. It also brought out the best in Walker's teammates. Paul Pierce and Ricky Davis scored 29 points apiece in Walker's first home game here in nearly two years, lifting the Boston Celtics to a 104-101 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. The home crowd gave a warm reception to Walker, a former Celtics captain who was playing his first home game since returning to the team Thursday in a trade with Atlanta. He shined in his first two outings after the deal, helping Boston win a pair on the road. "It was very special. It was better than when I came back (to Boston) with Dallas," said Walker, referring to last season when he played his first game in Boston as an opponent. Wearing his old No. 8 after rookie Al Jefferson relinquished the number, Walker provided 16 points and 13 rebounds in this one, finishing with his third double-double in as many games since the deal. But the scoring load fell squarely on Pierce and Davis, who fueled the Celtics to their 15th win in 19 home games. Pierce scored 13 points in the first quarter and Davis added 11 in the second, finishing the half with an alley-oop slam to send Boston into the break with a 56-51 lead. "Antoine has definitely given us a spark since he has been here," Pierce said. "We are just trying to keep it going. We felt like with the addition of Antoine, there has been a lot of pressure taken off not only me, but the rest of the guys on the team." "I felt good tonight," Davis said. "I came in ready and focused. It can get better than this, though. This team can be real dangerous. We've got the three-headed monster now. Antoine has been working and learning the plays to try to figure out what we are running." After a back-and-forth third quarter, the Celtics managed to take a 92-85 lead with 5:55 left on a free throw by Jefferson. The Lakers scored seven straight points to tie it, but Walker's second straight basket gave Boston the lead for good, 98-96, with 2:31 to go. A sore right ankle slowed Lakers star Kobe Bryant, who finished with 26 points but scored just nine over the final three quarters after posting 17 in the first. "It's OK," Bryant said of the ankle he sprained earlier this season, causing him to miss 14 games. "It just gets a little sore. I sit down on the bench when it gets a little tight. I just keep going about my treatment and try to keep it loose." "He never said anything about it," Lakers interim coach Frank Hamblen said. "He didn't mention it to me. If it was bothering him a lot, I am sure he would've asked out, but he is a tough guy. He is not going to ask out in many situations." Davis missed two free throws with 17 seconds remaining, giving Los Angeles a chance to tie on the game's final possession. But Bryant finished a miserable second half with a missed 3-pointer at the buzzer. "When your ankle is stiff, it's tough to get the lift you really want," said Bryant, who missed his last six shots. "I just wish I would have put a little more arch on it and it would have fallen for me." Bryant hit a long 3-pointer with 4.4 seconds left against the New York Knicks on Monday, forcing overtime in a game the Lakers eventually lost. He was committed to taking the final shot against the Celtics, and felt he had a good chance to duplicate his feat. "If I was kid back in the day in my backyard, I never would've missed that," he said. Pierce covered Bryant closely on the final shot and held him to 3-of-16 shooting in the final three periods. "I'm not really guarding him, thinking his ankle is hurting him," Pierce said. "I'm just worried about this guy who has made so many clutch shots in the past, I don't want his next highlight to be on me. "I just tried to (guard) his right hand and make it tough on him and push him away from the (3-point) line, and he just missed the shot." Chucky Atkins, who played in 24 games for Boston last season, led the Lakers with 29 points, including seven in the final 66 seconds to keep it close. The Celtics are 3-0 since re-acquiring Walker and two games above .500 for the first time this season. "I felt at ease in the game," Walker said. "The first couple of games when I played with the team, I had been working real well on the block in the low post, but I didn't finish around the basket. I just wanted to keep playing. (Now) with me, Paul and Ricky, we're going to be doing most of the scoring. We just have to feed off each other."
