Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Corey Maggette kept the Los Angeles Clippers rolling at the Staples Center. Maggette scored 34 points as the Clippers won their seventh straight home game with a 101-92 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. Maggette made 10-of-17 shots and 14-of-16 free throws to help Los Angeles post its longest home streak since it reeled off seven in a row during the 1996-97 season. With the win, the Clippers also took the season series for the Mavericks for the first time since 1993-94 campaign. "I didn't know that we hadn't beat Dallas in a series for so long," Maggette said. "Right now our team is trying to get into this playoff race. Dallas is a team in our way. We just want to continue to play the right way and do things to get us a win." "Physically, they really come and go at you," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We've always had a hard time with them. We've beaten them a few times but it's always been a close game when we win it. They win the season series this year. They handled us this year." During the Clippers' home streak, they have lost eight straight on the road. Los Angeles has the second-worst record in the Western Conference away from home at 6-22. "If we could take care of the road games we'd be in good shape," Clippers forward Elton Brand said. Jerry Stackhouse, who had missed the Mavericks' previous seven games with a right groin injury, opened the final period with consecutive jumpers to draw Dallas within 79-73 with 10:34 left. Maggette and Bobby Simmons combined for 11 points in a 17-7 run that pushed Los Angeles' advantage to 96-80 with five minutes to go. Josh Howard hit a free throw and a 3-pointer before Jason Terry converted a three-point play and a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 96-90 with 2:36 remaining. But Dirk Nowitzki missed a pair of shots from the arc and Maggette and Simmons each hit two free throws to all but seal the victory. "It was the kind of game that most every time I thought we were getting ready to make a run, we always missed the shot that we needed to make," Nelson said. "We didn't deserve to win but I thought we still had a chance in the final minutes." "Everyone is expecting us to lose against this team," Maggette added. "We have to be confident to go out there and win these ballgames. We have to be able to close out these games and not let them slip away. Tonight, we closed out the game like we should." Simmons scored 18 points and Brand had 19 and 10 rebounds for Los Angeles, which held a 52-32 edge on the boards. "This says a lot about our team to beat them at home like we have," Brand said. "Our guys can make a lot of matchup problems for Dallas. They are a good team, one of the upper echelon teams in this league." Howard produced 16 points and Jason Terry added 12 and 10 assists for the Mavericks, who had a six-game road winning streak snapped. Terry was not happy with his team's shortcomings against the Clippers. "There is no way we lose to that team," Terry said. "We're a much better team than them but we didn't play like it tonight. They played more aggressive than we did on their home court. There is no way they should be more aggressive than us." Brand scored 14 points in the first half to help the Clippers take a 60-46 lead at the break. Nowitzki recorded 15 of his 25 points in the third quarter, and drew the Mavericks within 73-68 with a three-point play with just over four minutes on the clock. But rookie Lionel Chalmers scored four points in the final three minutes of the period as Los Angeles pushed its lead to 79-69 entering the fourth.
