Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Once believed to be the future of the Golden State Warriors, Larry Hughes and Gilbert Arenas were unable to lead the Washington Wizards past their former team. Jason Richardson scored 34 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter, as the Warriors posted a 103-90 victory over the Wizards for their fourth win in six games. Teammates with Richardson in Golden State in 2001-02, Arenas and Hughes combined for 64 points in a 101-98 win over Houston on Wednesday, a triumph that ended a two-game slide for Washington. In this one, the duo scored a combined 50 points but could not prevent Richardson from leading the Warriors to victory. "It's our own fault," Hughes said. "We didn't put the pressure on them like we normally do. We let things snowball as far as letting them get in their rhythm." Trailing, 12-8, Golden State used a 7-0 run capped by a 3-pointer by Richardson to take a 15-12 lead with 3:41 to go in the first quarter. The fifth overall pick in 2001 scored seven points in the period and added five in the second quarter as the Warriors were outscored, 32-26, but escaped with a 53-51 advantage at the break. Antawn Jamison's 3-pointer early in the third quarter gave Washington a 54-53 lead - its last of the game - but Richardson capped a 13-2 run with a free throw with 3:28 remaining, giving Golden State a 71-60 cushion. "You have to give Golden State credit," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "They tasted blood and they came after us." Richardson poured it on in the final period, making 6-of-8 shots, including three 3-pointers, as the Warriors opened a 19-point lead at 103-84 with 1:55 to go. He was 12-of-19 overall and 6-of-11 from the arc while pulling down eight rebounds. "Baron (Davis) and Derek (Fisher) did a great job penetrating and finding guys open," Richardson said. "They were open shots, and when you're that wide open, you have to take the three, so we just took them." "The draw-and-kick game is a tough game because a lot of nights it doesn't work," Hughes said. "But tonight, it worked for them." Troy Murphy had 20 points and 14 rebounds, Fisher added 16 and five assists, Mike Dunleavy chipped in 15 and 11 boards and Davis 14 and seven assists for the Warriors, who improved to 2-1 on their eight-game road trip - their longest since 1962 while in Philadelphia. Hughes scored 27 points and Arenas had 23 and eight assists. Brendan Haywood chipped in 10 and 11 rebounds for the Wizards, who have lost six of their last eight contests. Jamison, who also teamed with Hughes and Arenas in Golden State, had nine points and nine rebounds. Washington begins a three-game road trip Saturday at Charlotte and plays 10 of its next 12 away from home. The Wizards are just 10-16 on the road. "We have to go on the road and we know we can win on the road," Hughes said. "We can't carry this loss with us and get uptight. The games are going to start coming fast and furious, and we have to be ready to play every night."
