Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Jameer Nelson had the best game of his rookie season at the site of one of his biggest disappointments. In his fifth consecutive start, Nelson scored a season-high 22 points and guided the Orlando Magic to their most lopsided victory of the season, a 105-81 triumph over the New Jersey Nets. Last season's college player of the year at St. Joseph's, Nelson was playing his first game at Continental Airlines Arena since losing to Oklahoma State in an NCAA Tournament regional final that ended an previously undefeated season. Last year's disappointment was not on Nelson's mind, but he got a reminder from teammate Steve Francis. "Steve joked about it and said something to me about it," Nelson said. "I don't remember what it was, but he said something." Nelson erased those bad memories with a stellar performance and has paid dividends for Orlando since being moved into the starting lineup. He is averaging 13.8 points, 6.4 assists and 4.8 rebounds as a starter and the Magic have won three straight. "He's really stepped up like a veteran," Magic coach Johnny Davis said. "He plays with a lot of poise and a lot of confidence. Just watching him, you don't get the sense that he's a rookie player. He's done a terrific job for us as a starter and he keeps getting better and better." In this one, Nelson made 7-of-9 shots from the floor and Francis scored 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting for the Magic, who connected on 60 percent (39-of-65) overall. "We had a good game together," Francis said. "That's what the coaches envisioned when they moved him into the starting lineup and we're playing well together." "(Nelson) allows Steve to be more offensive-minded," Davis said. "Jameer is a playmaker and Stevie is a playmaker and a scorer. It allows Jameer to do what he does best and Steve to do what he does best." Kelvin Cato made 7-of-9 shots en route to 16 points and rookie Dwight Howard made all three of his attempts and collected 11 points and 11 rebounds as Orlando steamrolled the sluggish Nets. Francis scored six points and Howard and Nelson added four apiece as Orlando jumped out to an 18-6 lead. The Magic connected on nine of their first 11 shots while the Nets, struggling with Orlando's zone, started 2-of-15 from the floor. "We just wanted to get them out of their rhythm," Davis said. "They've got a great team concept with a lot of movement offensively. We just wanted to curtail that some and have them think about what we were doing." Losers of seven of their last 12, the Nets cut the deficit to 22-15 with 88 seconds left in the opening quarter, but Francis connected on a 3-pointer and layup in a 7-0 burst to close out the period. Orlando had a 29-15 advantage after shooting 67 percent (14-of-21) in the first quarter and never relinquished its double-digit lead. The Magic led by as many as 34 points midway through the third quarter. "That's the second night in a row we got out to a large lead and held on," Nelson said. "We put our foot right on their throat." New Jersey shot just 36 percent (30-of-83) and was dealt its worst home loss of the season. The Nets matched their biggest defeat of the campaign and were booed by the crowd of 16,101 at the end of the first half and during a timeout in the third quarter. "A thoroughly embarrassing performance," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. "I have a hard time trying to explain, starting with me and our players' performance. We just didn't do a good job attacking their zone and allowed them to shoot an unbelievably high percentage on the other end." Vince Carter scored 20 points, but Ron Mercer was the only other Nets player in double figures with 10. Jason Kidd made just 2-of-10 shots for five points. Orlando needed little help from its bench as its starters combined to make 30-of-43 shots while New Jersey got only 39 points on 14-of-40 shooting from its starting five. "We live and die by the jump shot," said Kidd, who was 1-of-6 from the arc. "That's the way this season has been. As much as we want to get it inside, when we win we make jump shots. You're going to have some game like this, you just can't have too many."
