Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Kobe Bryant is doing everything he can to keep the Los Angeles Lakers in the playoff hunt. Bryant had 37 points and 10 rebounds as the Lakers held on for a 103-94 victory over the reeling Indiana Pacers. The NBA's second-leading scorer, Bryant scored 40 points as Los Angeles snapped a four-game skid Friday against Dallas. He was nearly as good in this one, making 12-of-24 shots to lift the Lakers (30-28) one-half game ahead of Denver for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. "You want to control your own destiny," said Lakers forward Lamar Odom, who had 13 points and nine rebounds. "Right now, we're in a position to do that. So if we win out we'll secure a playoff spot." "I think our execution is getting better," Bryant said. "The more we play and get used to the offense, the better we'll get at it." Bryant scored 11 points in the final three minutes of the third period to help the Lakers take a 77-65 lead into the fourth quarter. "Kobe had a great game and we couldn't seem to find a way to stop him," Pacers swingman Stephen Jackson said. Jumaine Jones hit a pair of 3-pointers around two free throws by Austin Croshere to push the advantage to 83-67 with 10 minutes left. But Fred Jones, Jackson and James Jones combined to hit four shots from the arc in a 15-6 run capped by Reggie Miller's jumper with 2:14 remaining that cut the Pacers' deficit to 95-90. "It was a little too late," Fred Jones said. "It was a tough night for us to make a shot. Down the stretch we started hitting. All we needed was for the game to go a couple more quarters." Indiana, which trailed for the entire second half, made 31 percent (9-of-29) of its 3-pointers. "It's a system that when you play from behind you end up taking a lot of 3-point shots," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "But 29 is clearly too many. We're going to have to be a little more selective and we have to find some ways to get the ball inside." Indiana got no closer as Chucky Atkins made 8-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. Atkins and Bryant combined to make all 23 of their free throws for Los Angeles, which shot nearly 90 percent (33-of-37) from the line. Atkins admitted that he keeps track of Los Angeles' competition in the playoff race. "We need to win as many games as we can," Atkins said. "Minnesota won today, the Nuggets won last night and (Tuesday's contest vs. the Clippers) is going to be another double game for us." Jackson scored 29 points and Fred Jones added 18 for the Pacers (29-30), which lost for the fourth time in five games and fell into a tie with Philadelphia for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. "Since we came back from the All-Star break we have been trying to play every game with a sense of urgency," Jackson added. "Every game counts for us to get into the playoffs. We just want to keep playing like professionals and hope the ball starts coming our way."
