Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- The Cleveland Cavaliers found an easy solution to pull away from the Orlando Magic: Pound the ball inside to Drew Gooden and Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Gooden scored 12 of his 23 points and Ilgauskas eight of his 18 in the third quarter as the Cavaliers cruised past the Magic, 111-92, snapping a season-high six-game losing streak. "It was the perfect game to get us out of a funk," Cleveland coach Paul Silas said. "I thought the guys were on a mission tonight. They were tired of losing." There was a sigh of relief in a celebratory Cavaliers locker room afterward, where Cleveland's new ownership, led by Daniel Gilbert, David Katzman and recording artist Usher, enjoyed its first win after three losses. LeBron James collected 23 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Cavaliers, who had lost seven of their previous eight games. "Tonight was a big game," James said. "If we had lost, we would have slid to sixth (in the Eastern Conference standings)." Thanks to James, who scored 12 first-quarter points, Cleveland led throughout but held just a 53-49 edge at the break. James usually distributes the ball more in the first quarter, but said his game plan was to take charge early. "I got off to a great start," James said. "With a six-game losing streak, I had to switch up (my approach)." The Cavaliers worked the ball inside in the third quarter and soon pushed their advantage to 70-53 on a 3-pointer by Jeff McInnis with 6:45 left. McInnis' triple capped an 11-0 Cleveland run. The Cavaliers shot 63 percent (12-of-19) in the third quarter en route to an 84-67 cushion entering the fourth period. They finished at 52 percent (45-of-86). "We have to keep the energy going," said Gooden, who came to Cleveland from Orlando in a trade last summer. "There was a lot at stake out there tonight." Gilbert and Silas were pleased with the return to action of rookie forward Anderson Varejao. The 6-10 Brazilian has been sidelined with a high ankle sprain and not seen game action since January 24. He collected six points and three rebounds in 19 minutes. "(Anderson) brings energy for us," Silas said. "He's a fan favorite. He was missed." "He reminds me of a more stable Dennis Rodman," Gilbert said. Steve Francis scored 21 points to pace Orlando but was held scoreless in the third quarter while beset with four fouls. Rookie Jameer Nelson added 17 points for the Magic, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. "We had a game until the third quarter," Orlando coach Johnny Davis said. "They played like a team that was desperate for a win and they sustained it for 48 minutes." "We were very careless, including myself, at the beginning of the third (quarter) and that really helped them get out to a quick start," Francis said. Orlando played without All-Star forward Grant Hill, who has a bruised shin.
