Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Corey Maggette and Elton Brand bolstered the Los Angeles Clippers' flickering playoff hopes while damaging those of their intracity foes. Maggette scored 30 points and Brand collected 22, 15 rebounds and four blocks as the Clippers halted a two-game slide with a 110-101 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers (30-29) dropped one-half game behind the idle Denver Nuggets for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, while the Clippers (27-34) are 4 1/2 back. This one was important for the defending Western Conference champions as they play their next six and eight of their next nine games on the road. On the trip, the Lakers will meet the likes of Dallas, Denver, Indiana and a visit to Miami to face Shaquille O'Neal. "Our backs are against the wall," Lakers interim coach Frank Hamblen said. "Our schedule is a monster here on out. We'll see if we stay together or we fragment." With the Lakers leading, 54-44, early in the third quarter, the Clippers reeled off the next 16 points. Maggette scored six and Brand added four during the spurt as the Clippers grabbed a 60-54 advantage with 7:15 left and never trailed thereafter. "I told our guys basically in the huddle, 'Let's weather the storm, keep it tight in the first half and then come out in the second half and make our run,'" Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Our guys came out strong in the third quarter." "Defensively, we didn't do as well in the first half," Brand said. "Then in the second half, we limited guys to free throws and to not giving them open shots." Both Maggette and Brand alluded to Dunleavy's challenge to the team following Monday's home loss to Memphis as inspiration for the performance against the Lakers. "We really played well tonight," said Maggette, who also had seven assists. "Coach got into us yesterday and we are glad that everyone responded and came out here and played the right way." "I am very proud of our team," Brand said. "Coach challenged us a little bit after the Memphis loss and expected us to play to the best of our ability." Trailing by 11 points in the fourth quarter, the Lakers rallied behind a pair of 3-pointers from Jumaine Jones and one from ex-Clipper Lamar Odom. Odom scored 11 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter before being ejected with 1:47 left for launching the ball into the stands in frustration. "There was a minute left in a playoff-type game and sometimes athletes, after the whistle is blown, make a decision we could take back," Odom said. "I was just caught up in the game and the competition. It was a dumb decision." The Lakers were within one when Bobby Simmons, who scored 16 points, buried a 3-pointer with 3:46 left that gave the Clippers a 99-95 lead. The Lakers never threatened the rest of the way. "It was big for our team and put us up four," Simmons said. "I had shots going in and out in the first half but fortunately I knew the shots were going to drop for me eventually. So I got a good look and I took it." Lakers All-Star Kobe Bryant scored 41 points but only six in the fourth quarter. The Lakers are just 4-4 this season when Bryant scores 40 points. "It is not about me individually," Bryant said when asked if the Clippers did anything to slow him down in the fourth quarter. "I can score any time I want to. It's not about that. It's about us winning the ball game. And the reason we lost the ballgame is we came out very flat at the beginning of the game and again to start the second half." "We withstood a big first half by Kobe," Dunleavy said. "He got to the free-throw line a bunch and made some extremely tough shots. I wasn't disappointed in our coverage on him in the first half, it was just that he probably had three or four buckets that were only buckets he can make."
