Game StoryNEW YORK (Ticker) -- The New York Knicks are getting back into the playoff race at home. Jamal Crawford scored 19 points and the Knicks provided a strong defensive effort in their seventh straight home win, a 93-83 victory over the Washington Wizards. The win improved the Knicks to 5-1 since the deadline deals for forwards Maurice Taylor and Malik Rose, trades that improved their depth but drew heavy criticism for adding more money to the payroll. Their current run at home is the longest here since an eight-game winning streak February 25-March 17, 2001. It has featured five double-digit victories, a result of better execution down the stretch. "That is a great sign," swingman Penny Hardaway said. "Adding Maurice and Malik along with us being healthy, we are able to win some games." "Our goal is to win," guard Stephon Marbury added. "Since the All-Star break, everyone made up their mind as far as what they want to do." The Knicks beat the Wizards for the seventh time in the last eight meetings by shutting down one of the league's top offenses. They held Washington to a shooting percentage of 32.5 percent (26-of-80) - the lowest by any opponent this season. The Wizards, who scored the first 13 points of the second half to take a 53-48 lead, were held scoreless for nearly eight minutes across the third and fourth quarters. "We're getting better in withstanding those runs," Crawford said. "A lot of times we would fold, especially coming out in the third quarter." New York had a 12-4 run to close the third period and scored the first eight points of the fourth to take a 79-63 lead. The Wizards got within 82-71 with just under five minutes left but Hardaway had a layup and Crawford a 3-pointer to put away the game. Kurt Thomas, who hit three jumpers in the 8-0 run to start the fourth, finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Stephon Marbury scored 14 points with 10 assists. Led by Hardaway's 12 points, the Knicks' bench outscored the Wizards' reserves, 26-11. New York (26-34) remained four games behind the Indiana Pacers for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks have four days off before hosting Seattle on Sunday. "The players feel pretty good about themselves," New York coach Herb Williams said. "When you're trying to get into the playoffs, you have to take care of business. As long as we keep winning at home and win a few on the road, I think we'll be OK. "We're not that far out of it. If you start thinking any other way, then you're really out of it. Once you stop believing, you might as well go home for the summer." Washington, which was without All-Star forward Antawn Jamison, got a combined 50 points from the backcourt of Larry Hughes and Gilbert Arenas, but only one other player reached double figures. "That had a big effect," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said of Jamison's absence. "He's one of the 'big three,' we like to say, and he's a leader on the floor. He's a guy who can make shots, who can make threes, who can slash to the basket, gets doubles-doubles for us on a normal night." Jamison had his league-high consecutive games streak snapped at 386. He missed his first game since April 19, 2000 when he was with Golden State. Hughes scored 27 points and Arenas finished with 23, including back-to-back 3-pointers that capped the 13-0 run to start the third. One of four teams in the Eastern Conference averaging at least 100 points entering the game, the Wizards shot just 22 percent (4-of-18) in the fourth and were held under 85 points for the first time since January 17.
