Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Orlando Magic rookie Dwight Howard's flagrant foul on Morris Peterson seemed to fire up the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors scored 12 straight fourth-quarter points after Howard's foul en route to a 106-96 triumph over the Magic, whose road woes continued. Peterson and Rafer Alston scored 16 points apiece to lead seven players in double figures for the Raptors, who handed the Magic a seventh loss in their last eight road games. Toronto held an 88-84 lead when the mild-mannered Howard knocked Peterson - the NBA's "Iron Man" at 258 consecutive games played - to the floor as the shooting guard drove to the hoop with 6:55 remaining. "I'm paying for it right now because I feel like I've played all those games tonight," Peterson said. "It was a physical game; they've got some big guys. To tell you the truth, I didn't even feel it (flagrant foul)." "The referees have a tough job. Every time they blow the whistle, somebody is unhappy," Orlando coach Johnny Davis said. "From my vantage point, our guys haven't made a foul all year, so you know how that works. You always have momentum changers in a game. I thought the flagrant foul was one and then the three right behind that." It turned into a five-point sequence for Toronto, which received a pair of free throws by Peterson before rookie Matt Bonner nailed a 3-pointer for a 93-84 lead with 6:42 left. "It definitely helped swing the momentum in our favor," Bonner said of his 3-pointer. "It's a lot further back than in college or last year when I was in Europe. You don't have time to look down and see where the line is." Milt Palacio added two free throws and Chris Bosh a pair of baskets before Jalen Rose capped the burst with a technical foul shot for a 100-84 cushion with 4:52 remaining. Orlando got no closer than seven points thereafter. "I thought we played well," said Toronto coach Sam Mitchell, whose team was outrebounded, 54-46. "I thought we moved the basketball and we stayed as well as we could with them on the boards, which is key for us." Bosh collected 15 points and 15 rebounds for the Raptors, whose 12-0 run was their longest of the season. "We didn't panic when they cut the lead down to four," Bosh said. "We understand that teams are going to go on runs. We went on ours and just put them out of the game." In a game of runs, the Raptors scored the final nine points of the first half to take the lead for good, 58-49. Their advantage was 80-65 before the Magic went on a 13-0 run bridging the final two periods, pulling within 80-78 on a three-point play by Hedo Turkoglu with 10:59 remaining. Steve Francis scored 27 points, Turkoglu added 21 and Howard chipped in 17 and a season high-tying 20 rebounds for the Magic, who fell to 1-2 against the Raptors this season. "If we can't win any of these games, we might as well just forget the playoff chase," Francis said. "We might as well let someone else go who's going to play hard."
