Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- It took two dozen tries and extra minutes, but the Atlanta Hawks have finally won on the road again. Tyronn Lue and Al Harrington each scored six points in overtime as the Hawks snapped a 23-game road losing streak with a 116-112 victory over the Toronto Raptors. Atlanta also ended a 13-game overall slide. It had not won on the road since December 10, when it knocked off defending NBA champion Detroit. "It's a big relief," Atlanta coach Mike Woodson said. "We've been knocking on the door the last three or four games. I thought our guys came out and played tremendous from the beginning to the end." Harrington, who scored 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds, gave the Hawks the lead for good at 114-112 with a layup with 38 seconds to play. On Toronto's next possession, Tom Gugliotta stripped Jalen Rose and Lue corralled the loose ball. Toronto chose not to foul, but after Harrington missed a jumper, Chris Bosh and Donyell Marshall knocked the ball out of bounds with 4.5 seconds left. "It's nice to pull out a victory for the young guys and for our overall team morale," Harrington said. "Thirteen losses in a row, 23 losses on the road is a lot of losing over a long period of time and guys can get down and start to not believe they can win. We made plays and made shots and hopefully we can build on this." Lue, who had a season-high 29 points and six assists, was fouled and sank both free throws. But Lue's biggest basket came late in the fourth quarter as he drained a jumper from the elbow with 6.1 seconds remaining with Raptors guard Rafer Alston right in his face. "He (Lue) hit big shots down the stretch, he hit free throws and he was clutch," said Hawks rookie Josh Childress, who had 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds. "Tonight we played a complete game and that's why we got the win." Toronto squandered a big game from rookie Matt Bonner and a big advantage at the line. Bonner scored 21 points off the bench on 8-of-9 from the field, including 5-of-6 from the arc. Toronto also made its first 24 free throws and finished 33-of-39 from the line while the Hawks were 22-of-32. "We weren't mentally ready to play early and there's no excuse for that," Bonner said. "We need to come out and play hard and tonight it cost us. It doesn't matter what a team's record is, if you're in the NBA you can play." Rose scored 22 points but made just 5-of-17 shots and missed a long jumper at the end of regulation that would have won it. Alston added 19 and 11 assists and Bosh had 14 and 11 rebounds. Marshall collected 19 points and 11 rebounds for Toronto, which had three players with double-doubles and six score in double figures but still dropped its sixth consecutive overtime game. "The thing is that we shot 43 percent and they shot 50 percent and you're not going to beat too many teams when you let them shoot 50 percent," added Bosh, who recorded his team-high 24th double-double. It was Atlanta's first overtime win in 10 opportunities dating to a January 25, 2003 victory at Cleveland.
