Game StoryORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett taught the youngster a few things down the stretch. Garnett scored five of his seven fourth-quarter points in the final 64 seconds as the Minnesota Timberwolves posted a 101-96 victory over the struggling Orlando Magic. Battling the 19-year Dwight Howard, the first pick in June's draft, Garnett had a quiet first half before flashing his superstar form after intermission. He scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half and finished with 18 rebounds and six assists. "Kevin was great coming down the stretch," Timberwolves coach Kevin McHale said. "He made a huge three-point play and made a beautiful pass out for an open jump shot. The 'Big Horse' was big down the stretch." Howard had a big opening half, collecting nine points and 11 rebounds, but then got into foul trouble in the third quarter and played tentatively. "Fouls are going to happen," Howard said. "I'm a rookie so I'm going to get some calls that aren't going to come my way. I got to keep on playing through it." Howard finished with 19 points and 19 rebounds. "To be that young ... it's like a freak of nature, almost," Garnett said. "If he applies himself and works on his game in the offseason, he can be a very special player in this league. The sky's the limit for that kid." Garnett's three-point play with 64 seconds left snapped a 95-95 tie and gave the Timberwolves the lead for good. He twice split free throws in the final 15 seconds and finished with 25 points and 18 rebounds. "It came down to one big play," said Magic guard Steve Francis who collected 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists. "And Garnett was able to make it late in the game." "I knew (Tony) Battie and Dwight (Howard) were really, really contesting the shots," Garnett said. "So I went into my bags of tricks and got them to bite a little bit. It was just a fluid shot." Former Magic Troy Hudson gave Garnett some help, draining a trio of 3-pointers in the final 4:44. Each of the shots allowed the Wolves to erase a deficit. "I've been doing a lot of extra shooting after practice trying to get my rhythm and get some confidence," Hudson said. "The coaches have been are telling me to be aggressive and shoot the ball when I have my shot." "Those weren't uncontested shots," Magic coach Johnny Davis said. "He made those shots. That's what he does and unfortunately for us, it came at the wrong time." Hudson scored 17 points for the Timberwolves (32-31), who won for the fourth time in five games to move back above .500. The Magic played shorthanded in this one. Grant Hill sat out his third straight game with a bruised shin and starting center Kelvin Cato left early in the second half with a sprained left shoulder. Hedo Turkoglu scored a career-high 32 points and rookie Jameer Nelson added 18 and seven assists for Orlando, which has lost three in a row and six of eight.
