Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs kept missing, which allowed the Denver Nuggets to keep winning. The shorthanded Spurs missed their last six shots and the Nuggets capitalized with a late surge for a 90-87 victory, their eighth straight win. Kenyon Martin scored 23 points and Carmelo Anthony added 21 for the Nuggets, the only NBA team yet to lose since last month's All-Star break. Denver improved to 15-4 under coach George Karl and handed San Antonio a rare home loss. "It's a big win for us," Anthony said. "A big road win. This win builds confidence. We never gave up. We were down the whole game but stuck with it. Winning here is not easy. I think they have lost only three here all year. It's nice that one of those losses is us." Playing without injured All-Stars Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili for the second straight game, the Spurs used a flurry of 3-pointers to build a 79-70 lead early in the final period. The lead was still 87-80 with 3:28 to play after a 15-footer by Tony Parker, who scored 25 points. But San Antonio did not score again as Denver closed with a 10-0 run fueled by Anthony, Andre Miller and Eduardo Najera. Jumpers by Martin and Anthony sandwiched a pair of free throws by Miller to cut the deficit to 87-86. Miller split a pair from the line to tie it with 1:14 remaining. Robert Horry missed a jumper that was rebounded by Najera. At the other end, he grabbed a miss by Anthony and was fouled, sinking 1-of-2 to give the Nuggets the lead for good with 30 seconds left. "This is why they traded for me," Najera said. "My game is rebounds and fighting under the basket. These things got us back into the game and into the lead. We won this one ugly but it doesn't matter how." Brent Barry threw away a pass and Anthony sank two foul shots for a 90-87 edge with 17 seconds to play. Parker dribbled away most of the clock before missing a 3-pointer before the horn. "That last possession was meant to go to Robert Horry to catch and find Brent Barry for three," Parker said. "It was just a bad play. There was only one option, so when that was dead, I had to do something with the ball." Miller scored 14 points for the Nuggets (32-29), who are riding their longest winning streak in 15 seasons. They kept pace with the Los Angeles Lakers in the race for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference. Tony Massenburg scored 16 points and Devin Brown added 15 for the Spurs (47-15), who have lost two in a row for the first time since December 8-9. San Antonio fell to 28-3 at home and into a tie with Phoenix for the league's best record. "It was a great effort by everyone," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "The guys played well enough to win the basketball game. I was proud of the effort and hustle all night."
