Game StoryORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- If the New Jersey Nets are going to get back into playoff contention, they will need more efforts like this from the backcourt of Jason Kidd and Jacque Vaughn. A few more matchups with the listless Orlando Magic could not hurt, either. Kidd recorded his 65th triple-double and Vaughan scored 22 points as the Nets rolled to a 98-82 victory over the Magic, who have lost four in a row for the first time this season. Kidd finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. He added five steals and notched his second triple-double vs. Orlando this season. While Kidd was a steady presence throughout, Vaughn and Vince Carter provided the bulk of the offensive punch for New Jersey as the Nets avenged a 24-point loss to the Magic at home eight days ago, Orlando's last victory. "Jacque got us started, in my opinion," said Carter, whose 33 points marked the 14th time in 15 games he has led New Jersey in scoring. "He made them pay for sagging off or not even guarding him. Once he got started, it was like a domino effect. Everybody started catching on." Vaughn scored 10 points in the first quarter and added 10 more in the third period, when the Nets outscored the Magic, 34-14, to take a 77-55 lead into the final 12 minutes. This from a New Jersey team that scored only 26 points in the second half in a 90-65 loss at Miami on Saturday. The Nets (28-36) closed the third period on a 27-8 run that began with three straight baskets by Vaughn and included a stretch of over five minutes in which Orlando did not have a basket. "I swear I've never seen Jacque shoot like that in my life, even in college when he was All-American," Orlando guard Steve Francis said. "The other guys were like, 'Man, he's hitting. We're gonna start hitting.' Once he started, the floodgates opened." The Magic (31-31) fell to .500 for the first time this season. They were 18-14 before trading Cuttino Mobley to Sacramento on January 10 but just 13-17 since. Francis, who voiced opposition to that deal, was virtually non-existent in this game. He shot 3-of-15 and committed five turnovers before being ejected with 4:07 remaining for his involvement in a dispute that began between New Jersey center Nenad Krstic and Orlando rookie forward Dwight Howard. "I think (referee) Joey Crawford saw the end of it because another one of our players pushed a (Nets) guy into me and I just pushed him off," said Francis, who is 9-of-33 in his last two games. "I'm not really upset about that. I'm more upset about the way we played." The Magic showed more frustration late when forward Hedo Turkoglu jawed with Nets swingman Zoran Planinic as the final seconds ticked off. The two had to be separated but continued to go at it verbally after the buzzer sounded. "I really don't have any idea," Planinic said when asked what caused the incident. "He says he is going to get me. I can't wait. There is no history between us. Ask him what the deal is and come back to me and tell me so I can know what is going on." Although Orlando's frustrations found their way on court, including DeShawn Stevenson's kick of the ball into the crowd at the end of the game, things got ugly behind closed doors when Francis was asked if the team was unraveling. Magic reserve forward Stacey Augmon strongly objected to the inquiry and became agitated, confronting the reporter before later apologizing. "We all knew that this was a game that we wanted to have and wanted to start the road trip out with a victory tonight," Orlando coach Johnny Davis said. "I thought there was a lot of frustration evident tonight because of the way the game was played and because we didn't play the way we're capable of playing." Orlando, which got 23 points from Grant Hill in his first outing after a three-game layoff, begins a five-game road trip Tuesday at Sacramento.
