Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- After easily winning the first three games of their road trip, the Houston Rockets had some trouble in the last one before David Wesley came through to make sure it would end perfectly. Wesley scored 18 points, including four free throws in the final 10 seconds, as the Rockets held on for a 97-94 victory over the Golden State Warriors. Houston won the first three games of the trip by posting wins against Western Conference powers Seattle, Phoenix and Sacramento by an average of 14.5 points. "I think it's satisfactory just because we won the whole road trip and we've had teams run at us," Wesley said. "You know this (game) being the most difficult, even though they're not as good as the three teams we beat prior, we still found a way to win even though it's a long, tiring road trip." The triumph over the Warriors gave the Rockets their first 4-0 road swing in eight seasons. "It's a great road trip," Tracy McGrady said. "Too many teams in this league can't say they went out west and won four in a row. There's some pretty top teams in this league. It's hard to win in this league and it's hard to win on the road. It wasn't pretty for us tonight but we'll take it and we'll go home and play with some confidence at home." "These games were really tough, but at least coming out of them we're all in a good mood," Yao Ming said through an interpreter. "I really didn't think we'd come out with four victories." With Houston leading 93-92 with 10 seconds to go, Wesley calmly drained a pair of free throws to push the advantage to three. After Baron Davis cut the lead to one with a driving layup, Wesley duplicated his efficiency at the line with 4.5 seconds left. "Anytime you're playing on somebody else's floor in a close game you're going to have to make free throws so somebody's got to make them," Wesley said. "I got open and I'm shooting free throws pretty good this year I feel pretty confident up there and I knocked them down." "That's the game in the NBA a lot of free throws at the end of the game," said Yao, who collected 14 points and 15 rebounds. "They needed to tie and they had to take a foul and try to make a three on the other side. So we keep the ball safe and make free throws on the line, that's it." Golden State reserve Mickael Pietrus, who scored 15 of his 21 points in the final period, missed a 3-pointer as time expired. "We lost 12 points so I think the game was on the free throw line," Pietrus said. "We have to keep working and just hope for the next game we're going to hit them and we're going to win." This one looked like it was going to be another easy one for Houston, which led by as many as 18 points and held a 76-62 advantage entering the fourth quarter. "We had 94 points, 12 in the first quarter," Warriors coach Mike Montgomery said. "We just shot the ball so poorly to begin. If you look at the statistics it was almost like how can we be 7 points down at the half. The guys played very hard through tonight. Houston is a very good team and we really hung in there and got better as the game went on." McGrady scored 18 of his 20 points in the first three quarters and Juwan Howard added 18 points before leaving the game just over two minutes into the final period with a sprained right knee. But the Warriors rallied behind Zarko Cabarkapa and Pietrus, who connected on three 3-pointers apiece, as they outscored the Rockets 27-13 over the first 9 1/2 minutes of the fourth quarter. Pietrus tied the game at 89-89 on a four-point play with 2:33 remaining. Cabarkapa collected career highs with 26 points and 10 rebounds. "I'm very excited about this game but not only me but all the guys that played good tonight and hard," Cabarkapa said. "It was a good game for us. We had a chance to win the game with the last shot."
