Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- What began as a shootout between Allen Iverson and Kobe Bryant turned into a blowout for the Philadelphia 76ers. Iverson scored 14 of his 36 points in the third quarter and the 76ers remained on their seesaw with a 108-91 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Iverson left in the fourth quarter. X-rays revealed a chip fracture of his left thumb. He was fitted with a hard cast and will be re-evaluated Friday. He is listed as day to day and no surgery is required at this time. "I have no idea (when it happened)," the All-Star said. "I just know it was in the second half." Led by Iverson, the 76ers raced past the Lakers, who were playing their fourth road game in six nights. Philadelphia outscored Los Angeles on the fast break, 21-4. "We're a fast-breaking team," Sixers forward Kyle Korver said. "If Allen is out there running, it's hard to stop him and we all feed off that." The game was billed as a duel between Iverson, the NBA's leading scorer at better than 30 points per game, and Bryant, a Philadelphia native second in the league in scoring. It began that way as the two engaged in a first-quarter shootout, with Bryant scoring 16 points and Iverson 14 as Philadelphia grabbed a 27-25 lead. "That's the way it looked," Iverson said. "I got into a good rhythm. Obviously, he was in a good rhythm. At one point in the first quarter, we were trading baskets." However, the Lakers could not keep up with the breakneck pace established by Iverson, who also had nine assists and three steals. In the middle two periods, they were outscored, 60-37. "We needed to get other people involved," Bryant said. "Once they started double-teaming me, I would kick it to the open man, but the shots weren't falling for us. They went out and jumped to a big lead." Iverson had an alley-oop pass to set up a soaring slam by rookie Andre Iguodala and sank a 3-pointer in a 9-3 spurt that closed the first half and opened a 52-42 lead. Iguodala had a fast-break dunk off a steal by Iverson, who later blew past Chucky Atkins for a three-point play and added a 3-pointer, steal and layup on consecutive possessions to push the advantage to 73-52 midway through the third period. "I watched the Wizards game (vs. the Lakers) the other night and I saw how they pushed the ball every play," Igoudala said. "The Lakers couldn't keep up with the tempo. Tonight, we had the same game plan - just get it out there, and we did a good job of that tonight." The Sixers led, 87-62, entering the fourth quarter and by at least 14 points thereafter. Bryant spent most of the final period on the bench and finished with 20 points, eight under his average. "It's tough," Bryant said "I don't like losing one bit. There are many lessons to be learned in this type of adversity. We have to take this as a challenge and do the best we can." "It's hard to stop Kobe Bryant 1-on-1," Iverson said. "You got to have team defense. You can't put that on one man. You got to have a conscious effort from everybody. Tonight was just better." Iguodala scored 15 points and Kyle Korver added 14 for Philadelphia, which bounced back from Sunday's 18-point loss at Toronto. Prior to that, the Sixers trounced Charlotte by 32 points. The Lakers (32-32) shot under 37 percent (33-of-90) and dropped to 2-2 on their six-game road trip. They fell two games in the loss column behind Denver in the race for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference. "We've just been very inconsistent," Bryant said. "We've had games where we can beat anybody, then we've had games like the last two nights where we can't throw the ball in the ocean, sitting on a boat."
